Position Summary
The Environment and Sustainability Lead is the senior environmental and sustainability authority within the PPP, responsible for integrating environmental protection, compliance, and sustainability performance across all partners and projects in a 20‑year £7bn deal with Sellafield. The role embeds environmental requirements into engineering design, construction delivery, risk management, commercial frameworks, and site operations, and drives innovation and ESG impact across a portfolio of complex national infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
* Embed environmental protection and sustainability into engineering design, construction, and site operations;
* Lead environmental and sustainability strategy, ensuring UK legislation and standards (e.g., PAS2080, ISO 14001, BREEAM, CEEQUAL, PAS2080) are met;
* Develop and deliver lifecycle carbon, operational energy, and life‑cycle cost assessments;
* Translate complex environmental data into clear, compelling narratives for stakeholders;
* Collaborate across designers, integrators, civil and process engineers to drive sustainable outcomes;
* Provide project management support for environmental compliance and performance improvement;
* Promote best environmental and sustainability practices within the organisation.
Required Qualifications
* Degree or equivalent in Sustainability, Environmental Management, Engineering, or a related field;
* Proven experience leading sustainability on major construction or infrastructure projects;
* Strong understanding of UK sustainability legislation, standards and carbon/net‑zero frameworks;
* Skilled in stakeholder engagement and translating complex data into compelling narratives;
* Membership of IEMA, CIOB, ICE or similar recognised body (chartership preferred);
* Experience with BREEAM, LEED, WELL or similar certifications;
* Good knowledge of PAS2080 implementation;
* Familiarity with Science‑Based Targets, carbon accounting platforms or social value measurement frameworks.
Preferred Qualifications
* High level of professional knowledge in sustainable engineering design, building physics and operational energy assessments;
* Experience in operational energy and life‑cycle carbon costing;
* Strong working knowledge of sustainability benchmarks, reporting tools and techniques.
