I have just taken on an exclusive role with an amazing consultancy that operates across the UK, with offices in the Central Belt of Scotland.

Heading up the Mechanical Engineering team, you will be responsible for the development of projects and people.

Experience with pipework, UK regulations, commissioning projects, and much more.

Role Overview

You will lead the mechanical engineering department, managing scopes, mentoring engineers, and ensuring high-quality technical delivery. This is a hands-on leadership role, combining technical expertise, project management, and team leadership to support continued growth.

Key Responsibilities

1. Lead the mechanical and piping engineering team, providing technical oversight.
2. Perform engineering design, calculations, and analysis, ensuring compliance with relevant standards, regulations, and client requirements.
3. Oversee the procurement of process equipment and installation services from concept design through to commissioning by managing equipment specification, layouts, and system integration.
4. Act as the primary technical point of contact for mechanical engineering queries, both internally and with clients.
5. Develop, mentor, and manage junior engineers, fostering professional development and technical capability within the team.
6. Collaborate with directors and other discipline leads to develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and resourcing plans.
7. Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies with project teams.
8. Contribute to business development through proposals, client presentations, and project costing.

Required Skills & Experience

1. Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
2. Chartered Engineer status (or working towards chartership) with a recognised institution (IMechE preferred).
3. Significant experience in mechanical design and engineering management, ideally within industrial sectors.
4. Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, including pressure systems, rotating equipment, piping design, and heat transfer.
5. Excellent project management skills with experience managing multi-disciplinary projects from concept to delivery.
6. Strong leadership and mentoring abilities, with experience managing engineering teams.
7. Experience engaging directly with clients, developing technical solutions, and managing client expectations.
8. Familiarity with relevant design software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.) and calculation tools.

Desirable Skills

1. Experience in regulatory compliance, including Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), ATEX, DSEAR, and relevant UK/European standards.
2. Experience working in an SME or consultancy environment.
3. Commercial awareness and ability to contribute to proposals and business development.
4. Experience with sustainable technologies (heat recovery, MVR, etc.) would be advantageous.
