About the Role:
This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of a prestigious journal at the heart of a dynamic surgical community. As Journal Manager, you'll lead day-to-day editorial operations, manage relationships with editors, reviewers, authors, and the publishing partner, and play a key role in shaping the journal's strategic development.
You'll work closely with the Editor-in-Chief, Editorial Board, and Committee of Management to enhance the journal's impact, streamline peer review and production workflows, and ensure the publication remains competitive in an evolving scholarly landscape.
Key Responsibilities:
·Oversee editorial processes from submission to publication using the Editorial Manager system
·Manage the relationship with the publishing partner, ensuring performance aligns with strategic goals
·Creating and implementing a strategic development plan for the journal
·Coordinate peer review, editorial team support, and statistical reviews
·Monitor journal metrics and lead initiatives to improve impact, reach, and author experience
·Support strategic planning and implement development goals in collaboration with the editorial leadership
·Line management of one Editorial Assistant, providing training and support to editors and statisticians
·Liaise with society members and stakeholders to recruit and support journal contributors
·Maintain strong connections with industry groups such as ALPSP and the Society Publishers' Coalition
What We're Looking For:
We're seeking an experienced and organised publishing professional with a solid understanding of academic journal management. You'll be confident handling editorial workflows, building relationships across a wide network of stakeholders, and driving strategic growth. The ideal candidate will be proactive, collaborative, and capable of juggling both day-to-day operations and long-term planning.
Key Skills & Experience:
·Proven experience in academic or scientific publishing, ideally within a learned society
·Strong knowledge of peer review systems and editorial processes (e.g. Editorial Manager)
·Excellent communication, organisation, and stakeholder management skills
·Ability to manage competing deadlines and oversee multiple projects
·Comfortable working independently and leading a small team
·Data-literate, detail-oriented, and strategically minded
