University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust is hiring a Biomedical Scientist – Clinical Biochemistry for our ISO15189:2022 accredited laboratory. The role involves analysing blood, body fluids, tissues and cells to diagnose disease and monitor treatment, supporting acute services at Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole General Hospital.
Applicants who are near HCPC registration may be considered for the Trainee Biomedical Scientist level until registration is achieved.
Main duties of the job
* Act in a scientific role, analysing samples with specialised laboratory equipment to determine disease presence or absence, enabling diagnosis and treatment monitoring.
* Responsible for delegated tasks and involved in the day‑to‑day organisation and delivery of a clinical pathology service that ensures high standards of patient care.
* Assist in teaching and development of trainee staff and support workers.
* Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of developments in Biochemistry as part of continuing professional development (CPD).
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Health Professions Council (HCPC) registration.
* Honours degree or equivalent in a biological science accepted by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
* Completion of IBMS Registration Portfolio.
* Working towards an IBMS Specialist Portfolio.
* Within 6 months of HCPC registration.
Experience
* Previous experience working in Clinical Biochemistry.
* Current experience within an NHS UKAS accredited laboratory.
* Experience in equipment validation and implementation.
Skills
* Practical skills associated with Good Laboratory Practice.
* Good attention to detail and accuracy.
* Basic computer skills and familiarity with common IT software.
* Handling biological specimens.
* Familiarity with Quality Management Software and Winpath software.
Personal Attributes
* Able to work autonomously and as a team member.
* Good verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
* Ability to prioritise tasks.
* Flexibility and time management.
* Physical capability to perform laboratory duties working alone on shifts.
Other requirements
* Speak English as necessary for the role.
* Willing and able to relocate for the role.
