The post of the Thoracic-Oncology Advanced Nurse Practitioner will be an experienced registered nurse with specialist skills to assess, treat and manage cancer patients within the clinical environment, in liaison with the senior nursing, management and medical team. The nurse will act as an autonomous practitioner in forming and delivering clinical decisions and complex management plans in the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of cancer patients.
The successful candidate will play a key role within the nursing team, providing individualised care to our cancer patients and their families/carers; and will be part of a team of Thoracic and Respiratory Oncology CNS’s and Registered Nurse Associates led by the Lead Cancer Nurse. That delivers an advanced and holistic cancer nursing service for patients and their families undergoing treatment and investigations for cancer conditions.
The post holder will be a core member of the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Lung Cancer MDT and Royal Brompton’s Sarcoma MDT, contributing expert nursing opinion to influence patient care. With a key aspect of the role to deliver consistent continuity for patients referred for specialist cancer care, by liaison with referring centres and healthcare professionals; to provide clinical excellence and excellent experience of care.

Main duties of the job
Management and Clinical Leadership

Service Development
Work in close partnership with the appropriate Clinical Leads and Service Managers to ensure all local, corporate and national initiatives and targets in relation to cancer specialty are met.
Financial responsibilities
Ensure best practice and good value for money when ordering supplies and maintaining stocks and adhere to the Trusts code of practice for financial management.
Information management
Responsible for the systematic weekly monitoring of investigations and appointments, in collaboration with the administration nursing and managerial staff who support cancer patients.
Education & Developing others
Develop robust governance systems by contributing to the development and implementation of evidence-based protocols, documentation processes, standards, policies and clinical guidelines through interpreting and synthesising information from a variety of sources and promoting their use in practice.
Research and Development
To participate in projects and research that will enhance personal performance and the operation of the service. To contribute towards meeting the objectives of the Nursing & Midwifery Strategy and Cancer Service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This will be a Royal Brompton Hospital base with cross-site expectation.
To support the Lead Cancer Nurse and provide clinical and managerial oversight as and when required to the Cancer Nursing Team.
In conjunction with senior nursing team and medical staff the post holder will formulate the development of clinical guidance for all aspects of clinical practice within the specialty of thoracic oncology. To improve and develop new areas of practice and pathways, working to ensure quality standards and key performance indicators are met. The post holder will work closely with the interdisciplinary team and collaborate with the nursing and medical staff to ensure that highest quality patient care is maintained and delivered whilst applying evidenced based practice and clinical expertise for cancer patients.
The post holder will be expected to support the delivery of the Thoracic-Oncology and Sarcoma service, which includes Teenagers and Young Adults (TYA’s) with cancer. To improve cancer performance and streamline the delivery of thoracic oncology within the inpatient and outpatient setting. With the post holder expected to cross-cover and work cross-site when required and attend the Sarcoma MDT.
The post holder will be required to be flexible to meet the demands of the service.

6. Evidence of managing clinical staff and/or services, service innovation and up-to-date knowledge of nursing policy and strategy, together with successful change management experience and a proven track record in launching new initiatives
7. Experience of delivering a nurse led clinic
8. Experience of managing, supporting and delivering care for cancer patients
9. Ability to manage change and contain conflict ensuring resolution with positive outcomes, with use of negotiation skills.
