The company is an established specialist in standby power solutions, delivering generator and control systems for critical environments. This PLC Control Systems Engineer role covers the full project lifecycle, designing, programming, testing, and commissioning industrial control systems across power solutions projects. You will develop robust PLC/HMI/SCADA applications and integrate generator controllers, switchgear logic (ATS/AMF), synchronisation and load sharing, and site communications, working closely with electrical design, project teams, and clients to deliver safe, maintainable systems to industry standards.
Package:
* Salary: £65,000 - £70,000
* Work Split - 70% office / 30% site (UK travel as projects require)
* Holiday: 25 days plus bank holidays
* Pension: Company pension scheme
* Healthcare: Private healthcare (post probation)
* Equipment: Company laptop and mobile phone
* Training: Funded training and certification support (e.g., APM/PRINCE2/18th Edition/Siemens/Allen-Bradley)
* Memberships: Support available for professional memberships (e.g., IET/APM)
* Expenses: Flexible site travel expenses covered
Responsibilities
* Produce and own control system deliverables: URS, FDS, DDS/SDS, I/O lists, cause and effect, alarms, and test plans
* Develop PLC/HMI/SCADA applications to internal coding standards and client specifications
* Configure and integrate generator controllers (DSE, ComAp, Woodward), including synchronising, load sharing, ATS/AMF logic, and black-start/priority management
* Interface PLCs with protection relays, meters, breakers, UPS, and BMS/EMS systems
* Lead FAT/SAT, I/O checks, loop testing, simulation, and on-site commissioning
* Troubleshoot PLC, HMI/SCADA, and communications networks, implementing robust fixes and design improvements
* Maintain version control, change management, and reusable libraries (e.g., Git-based workflows)
* Support documentation and compliance: as-built software, change logs, handover packs, and end-user training (O&M)
* Contribute to OT networking and cybersecurity: segmentation, hardening, backups, access controls, and secure architecture documentation
* Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of standards, templates, and function blocks
Requirements
* 5 to 10 years’ experience as a PLC/Controls Engineer delivering industrial control systems
* Strong PLC/HMI/SCADA capability, ideally Siemens TIA Portal (SCL/Ladder) and/or Rockwell Studio 5000 (Ladder/Structured Text) with WinCC/Unified and/or FactoryTalk View
* Must have written system code from conception / from design (not just small modifications)
* Experience integrating generator controls and power systems: ATS/AMF, synchronisation/load sharing, breaker control, protection interfaces, meters, and UPS integration
* Confident running FAT/SAT and on-site commissioning, including fault-finding under time pressure
* Solid industrial networking knowledge (Layer 2/3), managed switches, VLANs, NAT/routing, and troubleshooting common protocols: Modbus TCP/RTU, Profinet, Profibus, EtherNet/IP, OPC UA
* Ability to read/mark up electrical schematics and collaborate with electrical design (EPLAN/AutoCAD Electrical)
* Safety-first mindset with awareness of relevant standards and site processes (RAMS, PUWER, IEC (phone number removed) principles; functional safety awareness is a plus)
* Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites across the UK
* Right to work in the UK (British passport or settlement status)
