Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant
Shared management of paediatric stem cell transplant patients with haematological disorders including malignant and non‑malignant indications. Responsible for all aspects of the transplant journey including inpatient and outpatient care. Shared management of paediatric transplant inpatients with non‑haematological indications.
Advanced Cellular Therapies (CAR‑T)
Expand the consultant provision overseeing the CAR‑T service. Responsible for patient work‑up and treatment, outpatient management and liaison with base hospitals, including participation in the national CAR‑T panel. The Great North Children’s Hospital is one of three UK centres commissioned for CAR‑T therapies for children and young people up to 18 years of age. Early phase trial products are available, and the centre is positioned to develop CAR‑T and other cellular therapies for other indications.
Malignant Haematology
Clinical care of patients treated at the Primary Treatment Centre at GNCH, including management of patients with leukaemia and other malignant haematological conditions.
Laboratory Duties
Qualified (FRCPath or equivalent) individuals expected to contribute to the paediatric haematology laboratory service, reporting blood films, bone marrows, CSF specimens, and liaising with other paediatric subspecialties and general paediatrics. Responsibilities include bone marrow examinations, lumbar punctures, delivery of intrathecal chemotherapy, and bone marrow harvests.
On‑call Duties
Ward attending system during working hours and out‑of‑hours on‑call rota (1 in 5) within the integrated stem cell transplant service based on ward 3. Oversight and supervision of inpatients undergoing cellular therapies. Out‑of‑hours consultant haematology laboratory and haemostasis and thrombosis cover provided by sub‑groups of the adult haematologist service. Leave cover provided by paediatric immunology and haematology colleagues.
Administrative
Expected to take a normal role in management, administration and audit within paediatric haematology/oncology, paediatric transplantation/cellular therapies, and clinical and laboratory haematology.
Research
Involvement in current research within paediatric haematology, transplantation and cellular therapies welcomed, with encouragement to develop and extend personal research fields. The department is involved in early phase and NCRI‑badge trials and is a first‑in‑child study centre as designated by the Innovative Therapies for Children with Cancer and European Early Phase Clinical Trials Consortium.
Teaching & Education
Contribute to undergraduate teaching, focused paediatric haematology postgraduate teaching, and higher specialist training of specialist registrars and paediatric trainees as an educational supervisor and clinical supervisor.
