Overview
Principal Psychologist – ICU, Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The role works closely with the Critical Care Rehabilitation Team at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital and provides supervision to the Psychologist at Russell’s Hall Hospital. The post is part of a multidisciplinary team committed to comprehensive rehabilitation and psychological follow‑up for critical care patients.
Responsibilities
* Attend MDT ward rounds to identify and assess psychological needs of patients following critical care admission.
* Provide 1:1 therapeutic interventions for inpatients recovering from intensive care.
* Offer consultation and psychological expertise to ward teams and the wider MDT.
* Liaise with community services (GPs, Community Mental Health Teams) to support continuity of care after discharge.
* Contribute to service development, pathway innovation and psychologically informed approaches within critical care rehabilitation.
* Support staff wellbeing and provide psychologically informed consultation to teams working in high‑intensity settings.
* Contribute to audit, service evaluation, teaching and training opportunities across the service.
* Clinical supervision of Trainee Applied Psychologists and Assistant Psychologists; supervise Band 7 and 8a Applied Psychologists.
* Line manage Assistant Psychologists and hold accountability for own actions, ensuring appropriate support and supervision is sought.
* Maintain CPD with HCPC requirements; contribute to teaching on local Applied Psychology training courses.
* Work with MDT to develop psychologically minded models of client care; provide specialist advice, guidance and clinical supervision to direct care staff.
* Lead MDT in development, implementation and monitoring of care plans, pathways, and clusters.
* Take lead role in MDT delivery of QIP projects, NICE benchmarking and compliance.
* Identify service priorities and collaborate with Consultant Applied Psychologist and managers on action plans.
* Apply understanding of psychological change processes to support MDT and service redesign.
* Represent psychological perspective in governance, quality and redesign forums.
Qualifications and Experience
* Post‑graduate doctoral level training in applied psychology (or equivalent) accredited by the BPS, covering models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, neuropsychology, at least two distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
* HCPC registration as an Applied Psychologist with Chartered Status.
* Training in clinical supervision and supervision of doctoral trainees.
* Working experience as a qualified applied psychologist within a diverse client base, across life course and care settings, dealing with a range of clinical severity and settings.
Eligibility
* Post can be filled by applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship; sponsorship will be considered alongside other applicants.
* Applicants must hold current UK professional registration.
* Disclosure and Barring Service Check required (Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1975).
