Overview
We are looking for an experienced researcher with expertise in the generation and analysis of quantitative education data to work in the Observatory for Mathematical Education; a collaboration between the School of Education and the School of Mathematical Sciences. The Observatory is generating state-of-the-art, evidence-driven, and policy-relevant research to improve mathematical education, learner outcomes and longer-term benefits for individuals and society. Its remit stretches through primary and secondary maths education, to undergraduate study and postgraduate research in the mathematical sciences.
Responsibilities
* Carry out research of a high standard and demonstrate original research of international excellence.
* Prepare work for publication in leading journals and contribute to its distribution at national and international meetings, as well as contributing to Observatory reports designed to be accessible to policy makers and other stakeholders.
* Contribute to the Observatory's longitudinal cohort studies and analysis of administrative datasets (e.g. the National Pupil Database) and undertake additional evaluation and intervention projects in mathematics education.
* Collaborate with the School of Education and the School of Mathematical Sciences to deliver high-quality research outputs and support the Observatory's mission.
* Communicate research to policymakers and stakeholders and support dissemination at national and international meetings.
Qualifications
* Expert knowledge of quantitative research methods and statistical techniques.
* Experience generating and analysing quantitative education data, including longitudinal data and administrative datasets.
* Ability to prepare work for publication and present at conferences; ability to contribute to policy-relevant reports.

Salary
* Research Associate/Fellow: £31,637 to £46,735 (minimum £35,116 with relevant PhD).
* Senior Research Fellow: £45,413 to £57,422

Jubilee Campus
Hours and start
* Hours: Full-time; applications of 21¾ hours per week and above will be considered; flexible working arrangements may be discussed; secure data accessed via the Observatory's Data Lab on Jubilee Campus, University of Nottingham.
* Start date: Available from 5 January 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter).
* Contract: Permanent role initially with underlying funding until 17 October 2028; further funding is expected to extend this role to October 2033.
