Job overview

We are looking to appoint a Fixed Term for 4 months, 9PA's Consultant with experience in general paediatrics.

The post holder will work collaboratively with the consultant team and will cover general paediatrics and neonatal ward rounds, general paediatrics clinic and will take part in the on‑call rota in General Paediatrics and Neonates.

The successful candidate will join a team of 16 Paediatric Consultants who share General Paediatric and neonatal work. There are also 4 SAS doctors, 4 Tier 2 Paediatric STs, 7 Tier 1 doctors, 2 CANPs and 2 Physician Associates on the acute paediatric rota in addition to Clinical Nurse Specialist for Epilepsy, Asthma and Diabetes and Cardiology. Routine educational activities include weekly junior doctor teaching programme in addition to Quality meetings, Child Protection Peer review and Neonatal Mortality & Morbidity meetings run as part of the monthly programme.


Main duties of the job

· General paediatrics and neonatal unit level 1 cover

· To share work related to relevant committees, working groups and training of staff within the department including relating to cardiology.

· Take part in a consutant on‑call rota for General Paediatrics and Neonates.

· To participate in tier 2 (registrar) level out of hours cover.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will join a team of senior medical and nursing staff committed to providing a high‑quality service to children and their families within WSH.

On‑call commitments would include management of children with acute problems in the General Paediatric ward and the Neonatal Unit.

Share responsibility for the training, management, mentorship and supervision of junior medical staff that work with you, and you will devote time to this activity on a regular basis. Share responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examinations and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to postgraduate and continuing medical educational activity both locally and nationally.

Participate in audit and continuing medical education (including self‑development and maintaining accreditation). There is a requirement for regular appraisal to be undertaken by the Divisional Medical Director/Clinical Director responsible for these services. You are expected to participate in trust wide audit projects.

Appraisal and job planning would be a requisite undertaken with the Medical Director /Clinical Director.

You will be expected to have up‑to‑date resuscitation skills in neonates and paediatrics, with valid APLS /EPALS and NLS certification.

The post holder is expected, along with Consultant colleagues, to participate in the assessment and management of children suspected of being the victims of abuse. This responsibility will be that of the ‘Consultant of the Week’ and ‘Hot Week’ Consultant.

Liaison is expected with the community nursing team to facilitate the care of patients within the home. The post holder should be available to give advice, often informal, to GP’s (or other colleagues when requested)

In the event of a major accident the post holder will participate in the implementation of the Trust Policy.

The post holder will work to standards set out in the National Service Framework For Young People and Maternity Services.


Person specification


Qualifications

* Hold Full GMC registration with a Licence to Practise
* MBBS or equivalent
* MRCPCH or equivalent
* APLS/NLS Instructor
* • Entry on the Specialist Register in Paediatrics and/or Neonates


Clinical experience

* Experience and training in child protection Level 3
* EPLS or APLS
* Experience in a wide variety of general specialist Paediatrics in senior’s role in the UK.


Management and administration

* Willingness to share management and administration duties with consultant colleagues.
* To demonstrate experience in clinical audit and an understanding of the principles of clinical governance
* To have attended a management course and have some experience of management


Teaching experience

* Experience in teaching students and doctors in training
* Formal training in teaching methods
* Willingness to develop personal teaching skills by participating in Trainer Development Programme


Research

* Critical reading skills
* Evidence based approach to clinical practise.
* Experience of research
* Publication of peer‑reviewed research
* Presentations at national and international meeting.
* Enthusiasm and plans for research in a DGH setting


Personal Skills and Qualities

* Show caring attitude to patients and staff.
* To be able to work effectively in a team.
* Committed to work within Trust policies.
* Committed to CPD as laid down by the RCPCH.

* The ability to communicate with clarity and intelligibility in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade, negotiate.
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following: - o PLAB 1 o PLAB 2 If applicants believe that they have adequate communication skills, but do not fit into one of the examples they need to provide evidence.
* Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities.
* Ability to travel to rural locations.
