Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Physical, Electronic & People Security Manager to join the Technology team at Yorkshire Water and help deliver the best service to our customers. Could this be you?

What we do

Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire we ensure over 5.4 million residents and millions of visitors each year can rely on clean, safe drinking water and proper wastewater services. We also look after communities, protect the environment and plan Yorkshire’s water delivery 24/7, 365 days a year. New environmental legislation, unprecedented investment and changing customer expectations mean this is an exciting time to discover opportunities in the water industry. The Technology team is key to meeting changing expectations of customers and regulators.

The Physical, Electronic & People Security Manager supports the Protective Security Manager in identifying, managing and mitigating security risks across the organisation. The role ensures robust security arrangements, maintains full compliance with government and Water UK regulations (including SEMD, Protective Security Guidance and Water UK Security Standards), and safeguards people, assets and critical infrastructure.

Where you fit in

* Play a senior leadership role in safeguarding Yorkshire Water’s Critical National Infrastructure, ensuring secure and resilient delivery of essential services.
* Ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory, statutory and industry security requirements, including those set by Defra, the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) and Water UK.
* Maintain full compliance with the Security and Emergency Measures Direction (SEMD), including ownership of the annual regulatory return and security incident reporting.
* Provide strategic leadership across physical, electronic and people security, setting direction and standards across the organisation.
* Manage a £10m capital investment programme across the AMP period, delivering effective and future‑ready security solutions.
* Ensure alignment with Protective Security Guidance (PSG), including security vetting and pre‑employment screening for employees, contractors and partners.
* Work closely with HR and the wider business to strengthen controls that mitigate insider risk.
* Champion and embed a strong protective security culture, raising awareness and accountability across Yorkshire Water.
* Lead, motivate and develop a team of security specialists and site‑access control subject‑matter experts, ensuring an efficient and high‑quality security service.
* Invest in continuous professional and personal development to keep the team up to date with emerging threats, risks, vulnerabilities and security technologies.
* Provide both technical and non‑technical security advice to colleagues and capital delivery teams.
* Ensure robust monitoring of internal and external threats, using intelligence‑led approaches such as crime pattern analysis to identify and mitigate risk.
* Lead and oversee security investigations, ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory and data‑protection requirements.
* Act as the security advisor to the Company Incident Management Plan, providing expert guidance during live incidents.
* Design and deliver security exercises to prepare senior leaders and key personnel to respond effectively to major incidents.
* Build and maintain strong relationships with government bodies, Counter‑Terrorism Security Advisors, local police forces and external agencies.
* Define, maintain and regularly test Business Continuity Plans, ensuring resilient processes and a reliable 24/7 security service.
* Drive continuous improvement to keep Yorkshire Water prepared for evolving security threats and risks.

What skills & qualifications you will need

* A subject‑matter expert in Protective Security, including physical, technical and electronic security controls.
* Proven leader with experience managing teams, processes and performance.
* Strong ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels, from senior leaders to frontline colleagues.
* Understanding of current security threats, technologies, vulnerabilities and malicious behaviours.
* Demonstrated success in driving sustained team performance against challenging business targets.
* Ability to build and maintain strong internal and external partnerships.
* Excellent communication skills, including report writing, presentations and briefing senior stakeholders.
* Previous experience in programme or project management.
* Strong background in conducting security and criminal investigations.
* Experience of site surveys, audits, security assessments and risk assessments.
* Holds or can obtain Security Check (SC) security clearance.
* Full UK driving licence required.

Although we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, we support flexible working patterns and job‑share options where possible.
