We have an exciting opportunity for an Accountant to join our Accounting and Reconciliations Transformation team. The team provides subject‑matter expertise in accounting and reconciliations to programmes and projects across the Society, playing a critical role in major systems transformations and the integration of Virgin Money systems.
This is a period of significant change and growth, and we are seeking to strengthen the team with high‑calibre individuals.
As an Accountant within the team, you will support the analysis of changes to our reconciliation and accounting processes created by changes to systems and payments journeys as a result of business‑wide projects. You will then help design and implement solutions for new or amended reconciliations and accounting processes, following established templates and working practices to ensure that change does not introduce control issues. This will also include supporting changes arising from the integration of the Nationwide and Virgin Money businesses.
The role is expected to support the team’s vision and strategic direction, provide robust accounting and controls expertise, and build enduring relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best.
The working hours (per week) for this role can be between 28 and 35 hours.
At Nationwide, we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK‑wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this job you’ll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you’ll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon or London office. If you are aligned to our Glasgow hub (as this is your nearest location), there will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events. This is anticipated to be once a quarter in Glasgow.
Whilst these locations are where we are primarily looking to fill the role, if you’re an internal applicant based in a different location, we would welcome your application and if successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this could work for this specific role.
If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.
What you’ll be doing
In this role, you will partner closely with project teams to understand and assess the impact of change on accounting entries, reconciliations, and end‑to‑end process flows. As systems and customer journeys evolve, you will document and maintain reconciliations and key financial controls, ensuring they remain robust, well‑evidenced and audit‑ready at all times.
You will produce clear, accurate process documentation to support systems specialists and developers in delivering change effectively. The role also involves supporting the investigation, analysis and resolution of reconciling items or control issues arising from change implementations, with responsibility for identifying themes, escalating risks, and contributing to effective remediation. Alongside this, you will design pragmatic and sustainable solutions for new or amended reconciliations and accounting processes, ensuring alignment with the Financial Controls Policy and agreed team standards.
