Applications are invited for an apprentice (level 6) Band 5 (Annex 21) Healthcare Science Practitioner in Radiotherapy Physics at the Leeds Cancer Centre, St Jamess University Hospital.

The apprenticeship will start in September 2025 and will run over 3 years.

On the job training will be provided at Leeds Cancer Centre and with the educational component for the Medical Physics Technology degree provided by the University of West of England.

On completion of the 3 years successful candidates will be eligible to apply for the Register of Clinical Technologists.

The successful candidate will be trained in many aspects of the clinical service.

Main duties of the job

This post is based in treatment planning. The main responsibilities are:

To contribute to the day-to-day work of the treatment planning section

To participate in quality control programme on treatment machines.

To assist with the work of the Mould Room Department

To fulfil the role of Operator as required by the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017.

The radiotherapy service in St Jamess treats over 7500 new radiotherapy patients per annum. The centre is equipped with the latest technology, including 12 Versa HDs, MRSim, RayStation treatment planning, a Flexitron HDR remote afterloading platform for advanced image guided brachytherapy, I-125 prostate brachytherapy service and Gamma Knife ICON. The managed equipment service has been renewed, ensuring equipment replacement and comprehensive support for the next 15 years.

Job responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Managerial

Prioritise and manage own work.

Keep careful records of all work performed on the patient databases and other appropriate records.

Support the training of student radiographers and trainee physicists.

Clinical and Scientific

Act as an Operator, under IR(ME)R, for specified areas of work.

Responsibility for the operation of linear accelerators, virtual simulators, treatment planning systems and other high capital value items of equipment.

Treatment Planning

The department produces over 5000 new treatment plans per year. Each plan is unique and specific to a particular patient. A significant proportion of time will be spent interpreting patient treatment planning requests from clinicians and giving advice to medical staff on appropriate planning techniques. This includes producing and optimising 3D CT based treatment plans according to clinical protocols.

Ensuring all patient images required to produce treatment plans are available. Identify and contour critical organs at risk on CT or MRI scans following clinical protocols and work instructions.

Produce re-plans when required, following changes to the treatment regime or patient shape. Carry out manual dose calculations.

Participate in implementing and maintaining the Departments ISO9001:2015 Quality System. Participate in staff meetings to improve effectiveness and efficiency of the planning service.

Accurately record all relevant information and ensure these records are maintained in accordance with the requirements of the department procedures. Often these records will be maintained in electronic format.

Communicate technical information to other disciplines across the field of radiotherapy. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with Trust staff including those involved with radiotherapy treatment and other relevant professional groups.

Support the work of the Mould Room as required.

Dosimetry Services

Take part in the routine weekly calibration of linear accelerators, ensuring that the doses delivered are within agreed limits.

Research and Development

To be involved and contribute to any development work as required by the Chief Dosimetrist, including the support of clinical trials and technique development.

Professional

To attend suitable seminars, courses and meetings as part of personal development and to further the work of the department. Ensure all activities are carried out within a quality framework and meet regulatory requirements.

* A-Level BBC (112 UCAS points) with a B in a science subject or BTEC DMM BTEC (extended diploma) in a science/healthcare related subject (or equivalent)
* GCSE Grade C or 4 or equivalent Maths and English (with certification)

* Awareness of the principles of external beam radiotherapy.
* Awareness of the needs of patients and clients and the required standards for appearance and behaviour.
