Applications are invited for a substantive Consultant Anaesthetist post with an interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia.
This is an opportunity to be part of a forward‑thinking, friendly and supportive team of Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists. The post is a whole‑time equivalent with 8 Direct Clinical Care Programmed Activities and 2 Supporting Professional Activities, offering sessions in both adult and paediatric practice, suitable for those wishing to maintain skills in both areas. The post will contribute to the paediatric anaesthesia on‑call out‑of‑hours rota with an on‑call frequency of up to 1 in 8.5 on a non‑resident basis.
Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital is a tertiary paediatric centre providing high‑quality, acute and comprehensive care for children up to the age of 16 years from the Grampian region in the North‑East of Scotland, as well as from the Orkney and Shetland Islands. It supports neonatal surgery for the level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit based in the adjacent Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and will move to the new Baird Family Hospital development. The hospital is the regional paediatric oncology provider for the north of Scotland and a Paediatric Major Trauma Centre in the North of Scotland Trauma Network.
A business case bid to expand children’s theatres in line with growing clinical demand has been successful, leading to an increase in operating sessions and workforce. The paediatric anaesthesia team is now funded for 8.5 whole‑time equivalent consultants, creating new clinical and non‑clinical opportunities and a sustainable on‑call out‑of‑hours rota with an attractive work‑life balance.

The department covers a comprehensive range of clinical services and supports structured undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training programmes. It is recognised for its growing research activity and for its support for a wide range of local, regional, and national professional activities.
The University of Aberdeen medical school, a state‑of‑the‑art clinical skills centre and several renowned research institutes and centres are on site, offering a unique opportunity for collaboration and for the development of strong research and teaching interests.
Applications from candidates wishing to work on a less than full‑time basis will be considered. Flexible working arrangements, including annualised job plans and job sharing, can also be accommodated.
Full registration with a licence to practice with the GMC is required. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register. CESR or Portfolio Pathway route doctors are only eligible once registration is awarded. Those with an International Recognised Specialist Qualification approved by the GMC must have a confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register.
Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training and experience who are not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive Consultant appointment is made. Whilst in locum employment, an application to obtain a CESR or Portfolio Pathway Specialist Registration can be made to the GMC.

As from 1/4/26, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will reduce from 37 to 36 hours per week. Part‑time hours will be reduced pro‑rata, but a corresponding increase in hourly rate will keep pay unaffected.
