We are seeking an experienced and dynamic senior nurse to join our Directorate of Acute & Specialist Medicine as Matron for Acute Medicine, leading our 35 bedded Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at St Mary’s Hospital.
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated leader with a strong background in Acute Medicine and/or Emergency Care. You will provide strategic, clinical and operational leadership, working closely with the Emergency Department, Virtual Ward, Discharge Lounge and inpatient wards to improve ED 4 hour performance, strengthen discharge processes and enhance patient flow through AMU.
As Matron, you will champion high quality, safe and compassionate care, lead on governance and quality improvement and support the development and wellbeing of our nursing workforce. You will foster a positive, collaborative culture and ensure excellent patient and staff experience.

Main duties of the job
1. Ensure high standards of patient care at all times challenging and ensuring others challenge poor practise, in accordance with the NMC Professional Code of Conduct.
2. In collaboration with senior members of the Divisional team provide assurance that the standards set out in the relevant Nursing & Midwifery strategy and direction of Nursing & Midwifery for the Trust are delivered at ward level.
3. Ensure local plans support all clinical quality external accreditation, for example Care Quality Commission (CQC) essential standards, Safety Thermometer, Commissioning for Quality and Innovation (CQUIN), Quality Accounts, NHS Litigation Authority.
4. Ensure agreed systems and process to consistently provide safe, effective high quality patient care and embed a culture of improvement, focusing on the Trust’s harm free indicators, measuring practice and using variations in the data to develop local improvement projects are in place on the ward.
5. Through visible clinical leadership ensure that the delivery of kind, compassionate and respectful care takes place, and that the ward team develop relationships with patients that involve better listening and decision making; ‘no decision without me’
6. Act as the patient’s advocate when appropriate, when informed decisions may lead to choices being made concerning treatment options.

8. Registered Nurse (level 1)
9. Post registration qualification in specialty
10. Educated to postgraduate diploma/degree level or equivalent experience
11. Recognised teaching/assessing qualification
12. Management certificate or equivalent experience
