Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are always looking forward. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Environment & Sustainability Engineering team in Transport for London’s (TfL) Capital Office. We are looking for a passionate Engineer to help deliver TfL’s vision of being a strong, green heartbeat for London. TfL’s Green Strategy and Corporate Environment Plan set out our ambition to tackle the climate and ecological emergencies, and our priorities from now to 2030. TfL Engineering & Asset Strategy have a pivotal role to play from strategising and solution development through to supporting delivery. To meet this challenge, we are building our Environment & Sustainability Engineering capability in line with the huge amount of interesting and important work we have ahead.
The Environment and Sustainability Engineering team provide a professional system-level engineering capability working across the asset groups to drive environmental performance improvements. The focus is on system-level technical solutions to deliver the desired integrated system outcomes across energy, carbon, air quality, biodiversity, green infrastructure, climate change adaptation and sustainable resources.
Key accountabilities
* Developing processes, tools, methodologies, technical or functional strategies, standards and governance, and identifying and influencing best practice, to deliver environmental outcomes and enable continuous improvement across TfL.
* Working closely with industry, internal and external stakeholders to exploit existing knowledge or technology and introduce relevant innovations or best practice across TfL.
* Advising and supporting projects and asset groups to deliver and develop environment processes and technical strategies.

* Ability to influence people and facilitate joint decision making – ESSENTIAL
* Ability to manage customer expectations and deliver service to meet expectations – ESSENTIAL
* Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyse complex processes, systems or data and produce conclusions or solutions, and to visualise and articulate these – ESSENTIAL
* Ability to quickly understand unfamiliar problems, technical possibilities and operational implications, based on a sound understanding of engineering fundamentals – ESSENTIAL
* Ability to manage multiple pieces of work, conflicting priorities and interfaces – ESSENTIAL
* Knowledge
* Working towards Engineering or Environment Professional Chartership or recognised international equivalent – Desirable
* Knowledge of the TfL Vision, Mayoral Transport Strategy, Corporate Environment Plan, business priorities and financial constraints – ESSENTIAL
* Knowledge and understanding of technically complex projects involving complex stakeholder groups – Desirable
* Knowledge of transport systems, infrastructure engineering and operations backed up by strong aptitude for holistic integrative thinking – Desirable
* Knowledge of whole life asset management, legislation, technical standards and industry best practice related to environment and sustainability – ESSENTIAL
* Knowledge of contracts management and commercial impacts of engineering decisions – Desirable
* Experience
* Experience of providing professional engineering or environmental design technical services to projects or asset groups – ESSENTIAL
* Experience of environmental and sustainability engineering in one or more of the following areas: energy, carbon, air quality, biodiversity, green infrastructure, climate change adaptation, sustainable resources – ESSENTIAL
* Experience of building relationships and influencing a wide range of stakeholders – Desirable
* Experience in planning and applying systems engineering activities on large transport, infrastructure enhancement programmes or complex projects – Desirable

Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.
