The role
This is a key role within the and will involve delivery of high-quality education and research activities.
The post-holder will be required to contribute to the leadership, organisation, and delivery of teaching in the broad area of Special Care Dentistry. In addition to the delivery of clinical teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes relating to dentistry, we would also expect the candidate to contribute to leadership and organisation of school-wide education activity.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong programme of research to complement existing research activities in the School, Faculty of Medical Sciences and University. The candidate will build on existing research in one or more of our three school research strands of Applied Oral Health Research, Translational Oral Bioscience and Dental Education Research. The candidate should look to develop expertise more widely in oral health and/or education research including to establish, where possible, new collaborations locally, nationally and internationally.
The appointee will be appointed at an Honorary Consultant level and will be expected to contribute to clinical services in the discipline of Special Care Dentistry within the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which hosts the Newcastle Dental Hospital.

Key Accountabilities
1. Contribute to the delivery of academic and clinical teaching in Special Care Dentistry and other relevant subjects as required by the Head of School
2. Contribute to the leadership, design, development and review of aspects of academic and clinical teaching as required including admissions, student support, student progress monitoring and assessment
3. Engage with internal and external educational quality assurance activities as required to ensure a high quality teaching offer
4. Enhance research activity in their field, which will complement and enhance existing programmes of research within the School
5. Develop interdisciplinary links with relevant research teams within the School and/or other Research Institutes in the Faculty and the wider University
6. Work to build regional, national and international research networks
7. Attract research funding to support areas of research activity
8. Produce high quality research outputs
9. Develop a team of researchers, including postgraduate research students, with similar interests
10. Undertake engagement activity to increase the impact of the school’s work with wider stakeholders, networks and communities
11. Contribute to the delivery and leadership of clinical services in the discipline of Special Care Dentistry at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. An annual review of duties will take place with both the Clinical Director and Head of School as part of the job planning process. The job plan initially will include the following programme activities:
12. Direct patient care x 4 (to include clinical supervision of students and NHS team members, new patient and review activity and treatment activity including with sedation and general anaesthetic)

16. An established broad knowledge and clinical experience in Special Care Dentistry and related subjects applicable to the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum
17. Experience of learning and teaching in subjects related to the activities of the School

19. Ability to develop and provide leadership to teaching and research teams

Qualifications
30. BDS or equivalent
31. PhD
32. Diploma of Membership in Special Care Dentistry of Royal College
33. CCST or pending CCST (within 6 months of interview date) in Special Care Dentistry
34. Fellowship of HEA or equivalent and/or Academic teaching qualification
35. Full registration, or eligibility for full registration, with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC) including entry to specialist list in Special Care Dentistry
36. Eligible for honorary consultant status with the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
