Job Purpose
The Project Engineer delivers engineering activities within their allocated project team, undertaking construction requirements for UK Power Networks assets and infrastructure under the direction of the Lead Project Engineer or Construction Manager.
You will collaborate with Programme, Project and Commissioning Engineers, Alliance Partners, Contractors and the Investment Delivery team to achieve our goals.
Key tasks include managing construction and delivery of a portfolio of projects safely and efficiently, overseeing capital works, APP and Connections, and ensuring substation work meets safety and quality standards.
Principal Accountabilities
* Deliver construction programmes for UK Power Networks assets operating at 400 V to 132 kV.
* Work with Programme & Project Managers to ensure programmes are delivered to time, budget, and quality drivers.
* Collaborate with Project Supervisors and EHV fitters to deliver all electrical engineering activities.
* Help manage budgets, record TQ’s, RFIs and operate the EWN system.
* Support UK Power Networks goals, including staff engagement and client satisfaction.
* Operate, test and commission HV Distribution Protection Systems.
* Operate, maintain and replace Control and Protection Systems.
* Ensure compliance with CDM and UK Power Networks Health and Safety policies.
* Develop site‑specific H&S & E procedures.
* Maintain compliance with UK Power Networks quality policies.
* Update the Asset Database related to project activities.
* Responsible for reactive and planned construction activities.
* Perform fault investigation and repairs.
* Modify equipment and drawings to enhance substation operation.
* Ensure compliance with distribution safety rules.
* Oversee all contractors and staff working on site.
* Undertake additional activities determined by job level and competency.
Responsibilities
* Co‑ordinate daily construction and maintenance activities with Client/Principal Contractors ensuring programmes are met.
* Collaborate with Outage Planning and Control Centre on circuit outage planning and coordination.
* Manage site work as an AP/SAP.
* Obtain quotations and raise Purchase Order requests with Finance & Governance.
* Provide early warning notices to Project Manager, Commercial Manager and Partners.
* Provide technical support as appoint of reference for the Construction team.
* When deputising for the Construction Manager, deliver team briefings and give feedback.
* Identify potential project risks/opportunities and raise awareness.
* Work outside core hours to respond to system faults.
* Assist in developing the Asset Portfolio Plan.
* Represent UKPN at meetings with clients and contractors.
* Ensure compliance with H&S procedures such as Putting People to Work and Distribution Safety Rules.
Qualifications
Essential
* Senior Authorised Person as defined by Distribution Safety Rules – preferably 132 kV or 33 kV; training will be provided for 11 kV holders.
* Experience in 400 V to 132 kV distribution systems.
* Minimum HNC qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
* Working knowledge of distribution HV systems.
* Knowledge of Building Services systems.
* Ability to read schematic drawings and understand content.
* Comfortable working in varied environments.
* Problem‑solving skills – identify issues and investigate alternatives.
* Full driving licence.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, MS Project and other custom software.
* Relevant safety qualification such as IOSH or NEBOSH.
* Knowledge of Construction Design and Management Regulations.
Desirable
* Broad understanding of UK Power Networks directorates.
* Strong deadline adherence.
* Skilful decision‑making.
