We are recruiting a high-caliber Principal Scientist to join the in vitro metabolism bioscience team within Research and Early Development CVRM, based at AstraZeneca’s Global HQ R&D site in Cambridge, UK.
CVRM is one of AstraZeneca’s main therapeutic research areas, delivering candidate drugs into clinical development. The CVRM Metabolism Bioscience department fosters collaboration and innovation, with a team passionate about advancing science to develop therapeutics for diabetes, obesity, dyslipidaemia, and liver diseases.
What you’ll do:
This key scientific leadership role involves excelling both in the lab and through project leadership. You will develop and lead scientific capabilities for drug discovery projects in the metabolic disease area, influencing departmental strategy. You will generate key experimental data supporting multidisciplinary teams across Cambridge, Gothenburg, and Gaithersburg.
Role Profile:
* Be an expert in metabolic disease research, actively contributing to a fast-moving portfolio of drug projects.
* Develop the group's capabilities through innovative scientific research to bring new treatments to patients.
* Collaborate with leadership to shape research strategy in the Metabolism Bioscience department.
* Promote scientific debate and innovation as a champion for novel drug discovery approaches, inspiring leadership and mentorship.
* Work on complex drug projects, solving scientific challenges with innovative solutions.
* Lead the selection and validation of research targets up to early clinical development across various therapeutic modalities.
* Be an expert in new in vitro models and methodologies, maintaining scientific curiosity.
* Act as bioscience lead and project leader on discovery projects, managing multidisciplinary teams and collaborations.
* Enhance the scientific profile of CVRM through publications, presentations, and collaborations.
Essential for the role:
* PhD and postdoctoral experience in life sciences or relevant industry experience.
* 5+ years’ experience in pharma/biotech and drug discovery.
* Expertise in metabolic disease research areas such as diabetes, obesity, dyslipidaemia, or MASH.
* Proven skills in in vitro pharmacology, molecular and cellular biology.
* Strong publication record and external scientific profile.
* Ability to manage complex projects and collaborations.
Desirable for the role:
* Experience in regulatory submission pharmacology sections.
* Experience with various in vitro and ex vivo technologies for signaling endpoint assessment.
* Proven ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously.
* Extensive network within the metabolism research field.
