Background – About Alt HAN Co The Alternative HAN Company (Alt HAN Co) is a not-for-profit company jointly owned by a co-operative of UK retail Energy suppliers. It operates through a forum of supplier representatives and a Board. Costs are recovered from energy consumers, via charges levied on all licensed energy suppliers. We were established in 2016 for the sole purpose of finding an industry-wide solution for smart metering in hard-to-reach houses and apartment blocks. Specifically, where the broadcast signal from a smart meter communication hub is not strong enough to reach the gas meter or smart devices in the home this problem affects around 5% of premises – and if not addressed could leave behind more than a million customers in the transition to a smarter, low-carbon energy sector. The Role The Technical Design Auditor provides independent technical and commercial assurance on completed Crowded Meter Room resolution works, ensuring installations meet approved design, safety, and contractual requirements prior to close-out. The role operates post-installation and prior to commercial close-out, reviewing completed works submitted by delivery partners for technical, evidential, and commercial compliance. Job Description The role involves reviewing completed meter room works to determine whether they meet the technical, evidential, and commercial requirements for close-out. This includes assessing design packs, as-built records, site evidence, and cost documentation. Strong judgement is required to identify where installations do not align with design intent, evidence is insufficient, or claims need to be challenged. The role supports technical assurance, quality control, and commercial validation, providing clear feedback to internal teams and delivery partners. The Successful Applicant You will have the following knowledge, skills, and experience: 1. Technical Audit & As-Built Verification Audit completed Crowded Meter Room resolution works against approved design and as-built documentation Review CAD drawings, design packs, and technical records to confirm installations match the approved solution Assess compliance with installation standards, layout requirements, and spatial constraints Identify technical deviations, design mismatches, and installation defects Confirm completed installations support future SMETS2 and Alternative HAN requirements where applicable 2. Quality Assurance & Evidence Review Review photographic and video evidence submitted through platforms such as SafetyCulture Assess whether evidence is clear, complete, and sufficient to support technical acceptance Verify key quality and safety checks, including cable terminations, intrusive imagery, and polarity testing Confirm workmanship and installation quality meet required standards Return incomplete or non-compliant submissions for clarification or remediation 3. Cost & Commercial Assurance Audit cost submissions and supporting documentation against approved scope and delivered works Review Compensation Events (CEs) and claims to confirm labour, materials, and activities are justified Validate that installed assets and billed items are supported by site evidence and recorded outputs Identify discrepancies, overclaims, omissions, and cost-related risks Support accurate commercial reconciliation through clear, evidence-based challenge 4. Stakeholder Feedback & Close-Out Provide clear, objective, and constructive audit feedback to MEMs, internal teams, and delivery partners Record findings, non-conformances, and required actions within the relevant workflow or audit platform Track remedial actions through to resolution and close-out Support governance and reporting through regular updates to the Design Manager and Quantity Surveyor Highlight recurring issues and contribute to continuous improvement across the resolution process Knowledge, Skills & Competencies Technical Knowledge The following competencies describe the knowledge, judgement, and behaviours required to perform the role effectively. Not all elements are expected on day one, but the successful candidate should demonstrate strong alignment with the core requirements of the role. Strong understanding of electrical and/or gas metering installations, including single-phase and three-phase configurations Knowledge of isolator arrangements, cabling standards, and metering infrastructure Understanding of smart metering requirements, including SMETS2 deployment considerations Awareness of HAN/WAN infrastructure and associated constraints within multi-occupancy environments Familiarity with Alternative HAN solutions and their application in complex sites (desirable) Document & Design interpretation The role requires the ability to interpret technical design documentation and assess whether completed works accurately reflect the approved solution. This involves going beyond simply reading drawings, to understanding design intent, identifying inconsistencies between documentation and site evidence and determining whether installations meet required standards in practice. The postholder must be able to challenge where designs have been misapplied, where as-built records are incomplete or inaccurate and where evidence does not sufficiently demonstrate compliance with the approved design or technical requirements. Ability to read and interpret CAD drawings, including layout, spacing, and installation constraints Understanding of wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical design packs Ability to assess as-built documentation against original design intent Familiarity with RAMS and technical specifications relevant to metering installations Ability to identify discrepancies between design documentation, site evidence, and recorded outputs Data & Systems Capability This role requires confidence working across multiple systems, datasets, and digital evidence sources to support accurate technical and commercial decision-making. The postholder must be able to navigate audit platforms, design records, operational workflows, and cost information efficiently, using data to identify discrepancies, validate completed works, and support clear audit outcomes. Strong system capability is important not only for handling high volumes of information, but also for ensuring audit findings are well evidenced, traceable, and communicated effectively across the wider delivery process.
