Job Description
West Midlands Police's Complex Enquiries team is a newly established unit. Applications are invited for several Police Staff Investigating Officers to be part of this exciting new role. These positions will initially be for a fixed-term contract of 12 months.
The team, led by a Detective Sergeant and supported by 8 PSIOs, will be based at West Bromwich Police Station, West Midlands, following a PIP4 investigative structure. Investigators will support current and historic child abuse investigations, along with other investigations across PPU.
The team will assist the wider investigation unit, support victims and witnesses, and secure evidence at various judicial stages.
Key Responsibilities
* Handling evidence related to Child Abuse.
* Locating, tracing, and supporting survivors of historic sexual abuse, including needs assessments and contact planning.
* Obtaining witness evidence through statements or VRI.
* Conducting investigative enquiries, including statements, VRI, search and seizure, CCTV viewing, forensic submissions, intelligence research, suspect interviews, file building, and court attendance.
* Ensuring investigations align with principles of Project Soteria and the National Operating Model.
* Maintaining compliance with EVOLVES principles per College of Policing guidelines.
* Managing personal workload, investigating crimes, and executing Holmes actions.
* Collaborating with external agencies such as social services, health professionals, ISVAs, and SARCs to develop networks and safeguard victims.
* Supporting the submission of quality case files to CPS, ensuring all processes meet DG6 guidelines.
* Responding to CPS action plans.
* Travel within the UK for enquiries.
* Engaging with the WMP Conversation process and reviewing objectives regularly.
* Acting with integrity and respecting individuals at all times.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
* PIP 2 accreditation (fully accredited).
* Experience as DC or PSIO.
* Experience with Crown Court prosecutions.
* Familiarity with working with CPS and judiciary.
* Knowledge of forensic submissions and reporting.
* Ability to produce clear and concise reports.
* Experience in a public-facing role.
* Willingness to view images and reports of child abuse.
* Flexible problem-solving approach.
* Full UK driving license and willingness to drive unmarked police vehicles.
* Understanding of confidentiality and data protection.
* Willingness to undertake training, including Personal Safety, IT Systems, Connect, Holmes.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Self-motivated, able to manage workload and make decisions.
* Teamwork experience.
Desirable Skills
* Holmes exhibits and disclosure training.
* Experience within PPU Child investigations.
* Experience in Holmes Major Incident Rooms.
* DMI, ABE, VRI training.
* Experience with West Midlands Police Connect File Management.
