We are looking for a full-stack developer to join the Computational Chemical Biology team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
The role is primarily to develop a series of web-based applications and interfaces for the Chemical Biology’s team resources (ChEMBL, SureChEMBL, UniChem). The role also involves the development, maintenance, and documentation of these tools, and supporting their usage within the EBI and externally. Additionally, it will entail some requirement gathering and use-case development.
The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and it is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry.
Your role
1. Develop and maintain web interfaces for ChEMBL, SureChEMBL, and UniChem
2. Assist in the development and maintenance of corresponding REST services
3. Adhere to established best practices in software development
4. Test services and identify any technical issues
5. Optimize applications for maximum speed and scalability
6. Ensure all code is clear, concise, well-documented, tested, and stored in a version control system, dockerized, and deployed in Kubernetes using continuous integration (GitLab)
You have
7. A degree in computer science, software development, or a related field
8. Several years’ professional experience involving front end development
9. Track record of delivered projects involving web interfaces
10. Proficient in JavaScript/Typescript web frameworks (Vue.js, React.js)
11. Understanding of the D3.js library
12. Experience in Python and/or other backend programming languages such as Java
13. Experience with search engines such as Elasticsearch and SOLR
14. Familiarity in SQL databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MySQL
15. Experience working with CI/CD environments, particularly GitLab
16. Familiarity with Docker and/or Kubernetes

17. A higher degree and/or relevant post-graduate experience
18. Knowledge of message brokers such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, and SQS
