Castle Howard, one of Britain's most iconic stately homes, is seeking a visionary Head of Landscape and Gardens to lead the stewardship of its extraordinary 1,000-acre estate. Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in the late 17th century, Castle Howard's grounds are a globally significant example of the 'English heroic' style, featuring formal gardens, lakes, cascades, fountains, and the celebrated Ray Wood - home to the finest rhododendron and azalea collection in Northern England and curated in partnership with RBG Kew.
This is a rare opportunity to take the helm of a living landscape steeped in history and natural beauty. You'll lead a talented team in preserving and enhancing the estate's horticultural legacy, while delivering an inspiring visitor experience and championing sustainable land management.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and deliver a long-term vision for Castle Howard's gardens and landscapes
* Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of gardeners, apprentices, and volunteers
* Oversee the care and development of formal gardens, walled gardens, Ray Wood, lakes, and parkland
* Implement planting schemes, conservation projects, and restoration initiatives
* Enhance visitor engagement through seasonal displays, interpretation, and guided experiences
* Collaborate with heritage experts and external partners to preserve historic features
* Champion biodiversity, peat-free planting, and climate-resilient horticulture
* Manage departmental budgets, procurement, and operational logistics across the estate
* Support education, outreach, and community engagement programmes
Person Specification
Qualifications & Knowledge
* Degree or equivalent in horticulture, landscape management, or a related field
* Deep understanding of historic gardens, heritage conservation, and sustainability
Skills & Experience
* Proven leadership in large-scale garden or estate management
* Expertise in plant care, garden design, and landscape restoration
* Strong organisational, communication, and project management skills
* Experience in budget management and external stakeholder engagement
* Confident in leading tours and representing the estate publicly
