Founded in 2020, ACUA Ocean is a fast-growing and dynamic start-up sitting at the intersection of clean tech, ocean autonomy, and maritime security. Our scalable, intelligent USV platform addresses critical needs: climate and environmental monitoring, offshore infrastructure resilience, coastal protection, and marine surveillance with minimal human or environmental footprint. We are hiring a Head of Marine Operations to work within our growing Ops Team delivering operations for our uncrewed surface vessels (USVs).
A successful candidate must be a team player with a passion for sharing knowledge and be ready to be at the grassroots of this growing business supporting the growth of a robust and diverse team delivering results that will revolutionise the way we protect and monitor our oceans.
Who you are:
* A fast-learner; practical, and comfortable in technical environments.
* At ease at sea and in a waterfront environment; confident in your seamanship, pilotage and basic engineering skills in workboats.
* Has experience in the drafting of marine regulatory documents, such as Risk Assessments and maintenance records.
* Dynamic and resourceful; you work efficiently and autonomously, with a proactive mindset and an eye for innovation.
* Able to work within and teams of colleagues from diverse backgrounds, skills, knowledge, levels of experience and expertise.
* You build strong working relationships and communicate effectively with your colleagues across various functions.
* You balance commercial considerations with a drive for quality, evaluating the data to inform your decision making.
What you'll do:
* Support the planning and conduct of sea trials, demonstrations, and other tasks, as a Master and/or crew of various AO-owned or chartered workboats during technically challenging sea trials, in Plymouth and elsewhere.
* Support the planning and conduct of sea trials, demonstrations, and other tasks, as Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) Master/Operator from our Remote Operations Centre.
* Conduct basic electrical and mechanical installation and maintenance of our vessels, supporting resources, and infrastructure.
* Support activities relating to the assurance of AO's compliance with HSE, MCA and ISO legislation and guidance.
* Support the provision of training and operational guidance to partners and subcontractors.
* Represent project teams, support on-site visits, and provide advice, guidance, and management to waterfront trials teams, contractors and third-party attendees.
* Support AO's ethos to monitor and protect the ocean in a sustainable manner - you will have an influence on how the systems are designed and used to meet new challenges relating to performance, uptime and scale.
What you'll need:
* UK citizenship. We will not sponsor visas.
* Minimum of a commercially endorsed RYA YachtMaster Offshore qualification (or equivalent).
* Experience in basic marine and electrical engineering (RYA AEC1 is acceptable).
* A UK Cat B driving licence.
* A willingness and flexibility to commit to reactive changes to a dynamic programme, and be available for some travel.
* Able to commit to a minimum of 5 days per week in Plymouth, and occasionally during peak-loading, some weekend work.
What's desirable:
* Prior experience in marine technical or engineering sea trials management and/or operations involving autonomous systems.
* A desire to take responsibility, and ownership of tasks under tight deadlines.
* An ITSSAR (or equivalent) workplace slinger signaller qualification.
* An RTITB (or equivalent) counterbalance forklift truck driving qualification.
* A UK Cat C1 or above driving licence.
