The Defence Studies Department which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022, is one of the few academic departments in the world focused on understanding the complex realm of war, conflict resolution, security, defence and international politics and relations through inter-disciplinary teaching, research, and engagement. Based at the UK Defence Academy in Shrivenham, Wiltshire, the Department of Defence Studies is home to a vibrant community of circa 70 academic staff, and sits within the School of Security Studies, alongside the Department of War Studies, which is based in central London.
The Department, part of the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy, is now seeking to appoint a new Head of Department to continue to foster excellent research, the delivery of an exciting education portfolio, and meaningful, long-lasting relationships with key military stakeholders and the wider university.
The Department has the enviable position of being based at the UK Defence Academy, creating an unrivalled environment to deliver education to military personnel from across the world, as well as to continue to foster a research culture that thrives on, and leverages the Department’s location.
