Overview
This role offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra-low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Expertise relating to control systems design and SCADA/telemetry systems would be beneficial.
Working within our Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate you will influence and shape how we deliver our service into the future. As part of our Technical Authority, you will provide technical engineering leadership and support to the whole organisation to meet our objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and meet our commitments to net zero carbon.
You will be part of a team that manages, develops and maintains our electrical engineering standards, including our electrical safety rules, for our electrical systems and equipment, which includes HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures and monitoring sites.
You will help develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on our electrical systems and equipment. You will also be required to hold a national incident response role which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.

The team
You will join the MEICA Engineering Standards team in Standards and Engineering, part of the Standards, Asset Management and Engineering department, within the Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The team provides technical standards, management, and leadership across mechanical, electrical and control system activities. The team is dispersed but collaborates regularly within the team and across the business.
Responsibilities
* Manage, develop and maintain electrical engineering standards and electrical safety rules for HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures and monitoring sites.
* Develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for employees managing or carrying out work on electrical systems and equipment.
* Support the national incident response role as required.
Experience / Skills Required
* A good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work Regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* A good working knowledge of control systems, including the application of IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry/SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Knowledge and experience in the development and delivery of Safe Systems of Work, risk assessments, method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
* Strong understanding of a risk-based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies and implementation, including FMEA, reliability systems and processes.
* Drafting and publishing electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, teamwork and communication skills.
Other information
This is a hybrid role, with a base location near your home. Some travel and overnights may be required. You’ll have an incident management objective in your development plan, and appropriate training will be given. Interviews will be held via MS Teams within three weeks of the closing date.
