Clinical Teaching Fellow in General Surgery ST1/ST2
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, Yeovil Site, is looking to appoint a Clinical Teaching Fellow in General Surgery (CT1/CT2 equivalent) on a 12 month fixed term contract from 5th August 2026 to 4th August 2026.
This is a full time, 40 hours per week position, working Monday to Friday from 08:00 - 17:00.
The Clinical Teaching Fellow in General Surgery will split their time between clinical duties within the surgical department (3 days per week) and medical education activities focused on teaching resident doctors (2 days per week). (60:40 split)
This role aims to enhance resident doctor education while maintaining clinical competency in surgery.

Job responsibilities
* Participate in ward rounds with the general surgical team
* Assist in theatre sessions and minor procedures
* Provide clinical input for inpatient and outpatient care
* Support resident doctors (FY1) with decision‑making and ward‑based learning
* Attend multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings where relevant
* Be allocated an Educational Supervisor to oversee training requirements
* Teach Foundation Doctors at the bedside and Medical Students
* Maintain a good working relationship with existing staff members in the hospital
* Perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant in conjunction, where practicable, with their colleagues both senior and junior
* Have opportunities to take part in the Surgical on‑call rota if desired
* Mentor postgraduate doctors, provide pastoral care, identify at‑risk doctors, offer support and refer to appropriate sources of help
* Possibly undertake the Certificate in Medical Education with the University of Bristol’s Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals programme, funded during tenure
Qualifications
* Medical Degree
* Full Registration with the GMC at time of applying
* RCUK Advanced Life Support (ALS)
* Additional postgraduate degree or equivalent
Experience
* At least 2 years’ experience within NHS environments at the time of starting the job
* Completion or expected completion in time to start the UK Foundation Programme or equivalent
* Previous experience in General Surgery at SHO level
* Experience in general medicine to at least F2 level
