Description

This role is for an Assistant/Associate Professor in Engineering Management based in Edinburgh Business School, with emphasis on Leadership and Strategy. The appointment supports the delivery of the MSc in Engineering Management and combines professional experience in engineering with contemporary management theory for practice-focused learning.


Role

Assistant or Associate Professor in Management, with a focus on Leadership and Strategy. Grade and Salary: Grade 8 (£47,389 - £58,225) or Grade 9 (£58,225 - £69,488) depending on experience. FTE: Full Time (1 FTE), Open Ended. Annual Leave: 33 days, plus 9 buildings closed days (and Christmas Eve when it falls on a weekday).


Key Duties And Responsibilities

* Undertake teaching and assessment duties and, if required, provide leadership on academic programmes.
* Contribute to content, design and delivery of the teaching curriculum, and the quality of teaching and learning, in consultation with colleagues within the University\'s international structures.
* Review teaching design and delivery by obtaining and analysing feedback from students and peers.
* Mentor and supervise students at UG and PG levels, providing timely feedback (formative and summative).
* Provide pastoral support and refer students for further help when needed.
* Support an excellent student learning and living experience at HWU.
* Develop subject expertise in line with current research and reflect developments in teaching materials and methods.
* Maintain strong links with business, industry, external organisations and the education sector.
* Collaborate with colleagues across the UK, other campuses and external networks for information exchange and future collaboration.
* Promote and market the University to recruit students and participate in recruitment events such as Open Days.
* Lead administrative tasks related to teaching, including preparation for examination boards and progression boards as instructed.
* Participate in relevant committees and departmental meetings.


Teaching and Scholarship

* Design, deliver, assess and evaluate teaching and learning activities across undergraduate, postgraduate and online/digital programmes where required.
* Contribute to curriculum review and enhancement supported by evidence-based scholarly activity.
* Enhance teaching provision and programme development using leading HE sector practices.
* Support student employability and the student experience; mentor colleagues in teaching and learning development.
* Engage in pedagogical research and disseminate results through appropriate publications.
* Independently and with colleagues, contribute to attracting external funding for scholarship activities.
* Influence the higher education agenda in a disciplinary area or teaching and learning more generally.
* Participate in international engagement activities as required (teaching, joint programmes, recruitment).
* Lead the administration of specific activities within the Division/School/University to shape future strategy with senior staff.
* Evidence of coordination, support, supervision, management and/or mentoring of research students and staff.
* Evidence of developing effective learning environments and student support approaches to enhance the student experience.
* Any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post.


Person Specification

Essential

* Education, Qualifications and Experience: PhD in business management; Higher Education teaching qualification or Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
* Knowledge, Skills & Experience: Experience designing and delivering high-quality learning activities and assessments at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, preferably including online/digital programmes, particularly in leadership and strategy; track record of teaching leadership and strategy at postgraduate level; experience delivering executive education programs; strong cross-disciplinary awareness; ability to work across subject boundaries; ability and willingness to learn new digital skills; understanding of information security practices; awareness of digital wellbeing in long-screen usage.

Desirable

* Professional experience within an engineering environment.
* Incorporation of subject and pedagogic research within learning design and programme development.
* Programme innovation and development experience; knowledge to support international activities.
* Record of high-quality pedagogical work published; experience with accreditation processes (e.g., AACSB).
* Experience bid for external funding and knowledge of the Higher Education regulatory framework.

The School of Social Sciences at Heriot-Watt University comprises Edinburgh Business School, the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies and the Department of Psychology.
