Research Computing Systems Engineer Location: Highfield Campus Salary: £36,130 to £44,128 per annum Full-Time, Fixed-Term for 18 months Closing Date: Tuesday 20 May 2025 Reference: 3080425JF As part of a strategic initiative in the space of interdisciplinary healthcare research, the University of Southampton is looking to develop a Secure Data Environment, sitting within its existing Iridis High Performance Computing facility, for datasets needing enhanced levels of security. This facility will be a key resource for the growing use of AI and data science in healthcare research, as well as providing a new capability for all research fields. About the Role This is a key role in the design and development of a Secure Data Environment which will be certified to ISO 27001 standards. You will be joining our current High Performance Computing team, who have years of experience delivering research computing, and working alongside our cybersecurity and information governance teams to deliver a service which can meet the researchers needs while complying with strict governance standards. Our research community are delivering cutting-edge research in the use of AI across numerous datasets, and this facility will combine traditional compute provision with AI-focused GPU capabilities. What youll do - Work with colleagues from the University to deliver the Secure Data Research Environments IT infrastructure and automation tooling required to deliver the Secure Data Environment and its compliance with the appropriate accreditations (e.g., Cyber Essentials/Plus, ISO/IEC 27001). - Work with a combination of virtualised and bare metal infrastructure to provide researchers a secure route to the specialist compute and storage capabilities they require. - Take a role in delivering the service, working alongside Senior Research Computing Systems Engineers and other teams such as Cyber Security and Information Governance. - Work with the project team to develop a maintenance plan and upgrade process to maintain the sustainable operations of the service. What youll bring - Experience of the use of virtual desktop and server environments. - Knowledge of research computing issues and opportunities. - Experience of working within a large-scale Linux server environment. - The ability to present your ideas and your specialist area to a wide and potentially non-technical audience. - The integrity required to work with both commercially sensitive and personally identifiable information.
