Curator (Special Collections)

Location: Oxford, OX3 0EE

Salary: A GBP 36,924 - A GBP 45,163 per annum plus benefits

Hours: 37.5 hours per week. Working hours 9.00am to 5.30pm. Some flexibility will be required at busy periods.

The Centre is incorporated by Royal Charter and is registered as a charity. Founded in 1985, it aims to promote understanding of Islam and Muslim societies through learning and scholarship. The Centre supports teaching, research, hosts lectures and seminars, and maintains a well-equipped library.


The Role

The primary responsibility of the Curator will be to develop, manage, and preserve the Centre's Special Collections, including library archives, manuscript and coin collections, and digital collections.


Key Responsibilities

The Core Duties And Responsibilities Of The Post Are

* Ensuring effective development, management, and preservation of the library's archives and special collections, including physical and digital manuscripts and coins.

Collection Development And Management

* Managing and supervising the manuscript collection.
* Cataloguing the library's archival collection according to international standards (ISAD(G)).
* Liaising with the Librarian and Fellow Librarian to create a cataloguing plan for the collections, including templates for various materials.
* Participating in selecting and acquiring an archival content management system.
* Ensuring effective physical and virtual services for users, including enquiry handling and reading room support.
* Ensuring compliance with legislation regarding copyright, data protection, freedom of information, and equalities, and developing policies accordingly.
* Managing and supervising digitization of the collections.
* Developing strategies and policies for digital curation, including managing digitized and born-digital materials.
* Coordinating with digital services and preservation colleagues for treatments and digitization work.
* Participating in the preservation of all material in the collections.
* Conducting annual audits of the collections.
* Reviewing policies related to Special Collections periodically.
* Creating and maintaining reference materials for the collections.
* Identifying and costing digitization projects to promote the Centre’s facilities.


Outreach and Engagement

* Planning and developing displays and exhibitions featuring collection items.
* Undertaking outreach activities to promote collections to diverse audiences.
* Building relationships with professional bodies, university libraries, scholars, and curators, especially those with expertise in Arabic and Islamic manuscripts.
* Participating in projects and activities aligned with the Centre’s strategic goals.
* Supporting externally funded collaborations and projects.


Skills And Qualifications

* Masters or higher degree in Islamic studies or a relevant discipline focusing on Muslim societies.
* Practical experience managing Special Collections, including manuscripts and early materials.
