This is to include the management of the maintenance, remedial and refurbishment works of all mechanical systems, in compliance with all statutory requirements, regulations and codes of practice. About the Role:
Solent University is seeking an experienced Estates Mechanical Engineer to join our Estates team. In this pivotal role, you will lead the management of the University’s mechanical building services and associated team, with specific responsibility for the Building Energy Management System (BEMS).
You will oversee maintenance, remedial, and refurbishment works across all mechanical systems—ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, regulations, and codes of practice. You’ll also provide technical expertise and minor design input across domestic water systems, heating systems, and HVAC infrastructure.
Your work will directly contribute to creating a safe, efficient, and comfortable environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
2. Lead and develop the mechanical engineering team, ensuring effective performance and professional growth
3. Actively contribute to the Technical Services Senior Leadership Team (SLT), supporting strategic decision-making
4. Manage workflow, priorities, and performance for direct reports, including leave, absences, and PDRs
5. Liaise with university stakeholders, contractors, and external agencies to coordinate works and ensure service excellence
6. Provide effective control and regulation of heating, cooling, and associated mechanical services
7. Take full ownership of the BEMS, including operational decisions and system optimisation
8. Collaborate with the Estates FM Systems Manager to provide expert guidance on BEMS functionality
9. Troubleshoot and resolve issues identified through BEMS fault and performance reporting systems
Work Pattern
This is a full-time role, working 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday. You will be based at our Southampton campus, with occasional travel to satellite sites as required.
We offer between 25 to 30 days of annual leave, plus a University-wide closure over the Christmas period, and additional wellbeing and professional development days.
