Job Overview
The Caretaker will play a vital role in ensuring the West Yorkshire Police Training Facility remains safe, operational, and well‑maintained. This position combines hands‑on maintenance work with day‑to‑day caretaking duties, supporting the smooth running of a busy and high‑profile environment. The ideal candidate will take pride in keeping the site in excellent condition, responding to issues promptly, and helping maintain a professional and secure setting for staff, officers, and visitors.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
General Maintenance
1. Carry out routine repairs and maintenance across the facility, including plumbing, joinery, basic electrical tasks, painting, and general building upkeep.
2. Conduct regular inspections of the premises to identify maintenance needs and safety hazards.
3. Perform preventative maintenance to reduce downtime and extend the life of equipment and building systems.
4. Support external contractors on site, ensuring work is completed safely and to required standards.
Caretaking & Facilities Support
5. Maintain external areas such as car parks, walkways, and training grounds.
6. Assist with room setups, furniture moves, and equipment preparation for training sessions.
7. Monitor stock levels of maintenance supplies and request replenishment when needed.
8. Respond promptly to maintenance requests and urgent issues raised by staff.
Health, Safety & Security
9. Ensure all work is carried out in line with health and safety regulations and site procedures.
10. Report hazards, defects, or security concerns to the Facilities Manager.
11. Support emergency procedures, including fire alarm checks and evacuation drills.
12. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and inspections.

Essential
13. Proven experience in a caretaking, maintenance, or general technician role.
14. Strong practical skills across a range of trades (e.g., plumbing, joinery, basic electrics, painting).
15. Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and use initiative.
16. Good understanding of health and safety practices.
17. Reliable, trustworthy, and comfortable working in a professional policing environment.
18. Strong communication skills and a positive, proactive attitude.
Desirable
19. Experience working in a secure or public‑sector environment.
20. Relevant trade qualifications or training (e.g., City & Guilds, NVQ).
21. Knowledge of building management systems.
