Overview
An exciting opportunity has become available for a qualified Band 6 Mental Health Nurse to join the Cambridgeshire Liaison and Diversion Service. Practitioners are based in courts and police custody units across the county, screening and assessing service users of all ages and diverting them where appropriate to minimise public protection concerns.
Responsibilities
* Screen and assess service users of all ages in police custody units and magistrates courts.
* Divert individuals where appropriate, ensuring no public protection issues.
* Provide vulnerability screening and support to court and custody staff.
* Advising partners on risk management while in custody.
* Deliver teaching and awareness sessions to key partners and maintain robust partnership working.
* Travel independently across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, meeting strict time deadlines and ensuring equitable service access for all users.
* Maintain accurate records, signpost service users to appropriate services, and undertake supervision of junior staff when required.
* Work autonomously, supporting police, court and probation staff as needed.
* Hold a full UK driving licence and have access to a vehicle.
Education and Qualifications
* Essential: RMN Diploma or degree qualification
* Essential: NMC Professional Registration
* Essential: Post‑registration training relevant to the service area
* Essential: Evidence of continuing professional development
* Desirable: Completion of a mentorship course or professional equivalent
Experience
* Experience of multidisciplinary working.
* Experience working in mental health settings and with service users who have a range of vulnerabilities such as drug and alcohol misuse, homelessness and physical health issues.
* Experience of partnership working across statutory and non‑statutory teams and agencies.
* Experience of conducting clinical assessments, including risk assessments.
* Experience of supervising junior staff.
* Desirable: Understanding of mental health challenges.
* Desirable: Experience of working within the criminal justice system such as custody and courts.
Knowledge and Skills
* Demonstrable commitment and enthusiasm for working with an all‑age service.
* Ability to assess people with complex vulnerabilities.
* Ability to record information accurately and clearly.
* Clear communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Confidence to work autonomously and make clinical decisions.

* Ability to seek and undertake supervision as required.
* Ability to liaise with and establish close links with a range of professionals.
* Computer / IT skills.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Awareness of the criminal justice system and the National Programme for Liaison and Diversion.
* Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act (1983 / 2007), relevant professional standards, Mental Capacity Act (2005) and Children Act (1989).
* Knowledge of the role and purpose of clinical supervision.
* Working knowledge and understanding of safeguarding.
* Desirable: Working knowledge of nationally approved assessment and screening tools for all age groups with mental health and other vulnerabilities such as homelessness, physical health, drug and alcohol misuse.
* Desirable: Good working knowledge of youth and criminal justice systems; routine and regular use of computer.
* Ability to travel independently across all Trust and criminal justice sites across Peterborough and Cambridgeshire.
* Flexibility to work within an 8‑8 service rota seven days a week.
* Demonstrable commitment to continuing professional development.
