About Us
Cambridge Dial‑a‑Ride is a charitable, membership‑based community transport service offering safe, affordable, accessible travel for individuals with mobility challenges in and around Cambridge. We use accessible minibuses equipped with lifts and secure wheelchair fittings, and support journeys for day trips, medical appointments, shopping, and visiting family or friends .
Role Summary
Volunteer minibus drivers transport members from scheduled pick‑up points or home addresses to destinations across the city and nearby villages. These are pre-planned group journeys managed by admin staff. You’ll help people who may have difficulty using public transport due to age, disability, or infirmity—often assisting with boarding, securing wheelchairs, and handling shopping or luggage .
Key Responsibilities
• Safely drive accessible minibuses between assigned locations
• Use and operate lifts and wheelchair restraint systems correctly
• Assist members on and off the vehicle, including those using wheelchairs
• Help with shopping bags or personal items and ensure respectful, supportive interactions
• Collect fares (via cash or contactless payment)
• Maintain punctuality and maintain clear communication with staff
• Follow scheduled routes and log journey details accurately
• Report any incidents or vehicle concerns promptly
Training & Requirements
• Volunteers must pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check through Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority
• All drivers undergo CTA UK certified MiDAS (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme) training, covering safe lift/ramp use, wheelchair handling, passenger care, and driving standards
• A standard UK driving licence (manual or automatic) is sufficient—no D1 licence required under our Section 19 permit, provided you’re over 21 and have 2+ years of driving experience
• Uniform (shirt and fleece) is provided
