Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, through the Wessex Genomics Laboratory Service (Salisbury), is seeking a full‑time Clinical Scientist in Cancer. The role is based at Salisbury District Hospital and is part of the Central & South Genomic Laboratory Hub.
Key Responsibilities
* Contribute to the provision of an integrated cancer diagnostic genetic service for the Central & South Region, collaborating with national and international referrals.
* Perform analysis, interpretation and report of specialised molecular investigations, including karyotyping, FISH, targeted next‑generation sequencing panel testing and whole‑genome sequencing.
* Liaise with clinicians, oncologists and haematologists involved in patient care.
* Develop and maintain clinical, scientific and technical practice within the diagnostic cancer service.
* Support quality management, laboratory accreditation and training activities.
Required Qualifications & Experience (Essential)
* Honours degree in a relevant science subject.
* MSc in a relevant subject or equivalent level of knowledge.
* HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.
* Significant diagnostic laboratory experience in cancer genetics.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
* Working towards FRCPath.
* PhD in a subject relevant to clinical speciality.
* Comprehensive knowledge and experience of clinical (specialty) service and service provision in a range of sub‑specialities.
* Publication record in the relevant speciality.
Additional Competencies
* Excellent communication skills for multi‑disciplinary team working and communicating complex scientific information.
* Strong understanding of quality control/quality assurance procedures and UKAS requirements.
* Ability to train and supervise staff and deliver continuous professional development.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively, maintaining judgement under pressure.
