About the Role
TKMS ATLAS UK is seeking a Senior Research Scientist to join its growing research and innovation team in Dorchester. This is a key role supporting the delivery of advanced defence and maritime systems for the Royal Navy and international partners.
TKMS ATLAS UK specialises in underwater sensing, naval technologies, and research-led solutions, operating at the forefront of innovation. Our work combines physics, engineering, analytics, and systems research to deliver capability that directly supports operational decision-making.
Due to the sensitive nature of the work, this role requires 4 days per week onsite, with flexibility for 1 day working from home.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and deliver high-impact research projects aligned to defence and maritime programmes
* Support bid and proposal activities, including technical inputs and strategy development
* Develop and shape technical approaches and research roadmaps
* Provide technical leadership and mentoring to small, multidisciplinary teams
* Produce high-quality technical reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders
* Collaborate closely with engineers, scientists, and programme teams across the business
Strong experience in at least one of the following areas is essential
* Signal processing, image analysis, automated detection
* Numerical modelling, CFD, or simulation of complex systems
* Remote sensing or ocean process simulation
* Laboratory-based experimentation
Skills & Qualifications
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
* Experience contributing to technical reports, research papers, or bids
* Proficiency with scientific and analytical tools such as MATLAB and/or Python
* Self-motivated, innovative, and comfortable working in a research-led environment
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
Security Requirements
* Must be eligible for Security Clearance (SC) with progression to Developed Vetting (DV)
* British citizenship required, with continuous UK residency for the last 10 years
