Quantity Surveyor
Join Balfour Beatty as a Quantity Surveyor and play a pivotal role in one of the UK’s most ambitious sustainability projects. We’re looking for a talented professional to join our Commercial team, working directly on the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) contract within our UKCS Regional Civils business.
About The Role
Net Zero Teesside (NZT) is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming the Teesside industrial cluster into the UK’s first zero‑carbon industrial zone. The project centres around a state‑of‑the‑art power generation facility equipped with post‑combustion carbon capture technology to significantly reduce emissions. UKCS Regional Civils will deliver a range of essential infrastructure, including sub‑stations, control rooms, storage units, welfare and laboratory facilities, and advanced water treatment plants.
What you'll be doing
We’re looking for a Quantity Surveyor with several years of hands‑on experience managing project costs and income across building and civil engineering works. In this role, you’ll take ownership of commercial responsibilities within your remit, including procurement and supply chain management. You’ll also support senior colleagues while guiding and mentoring junior commercial staff. Your focus will be on driving value for money and cost efficiency, without compromising on quality or customer expectations. You’ll play a key role in ensuring commercial success across all phases of the project.
Ideally, you’ll be chartered or nearing completion of professional membership with RICS, ICES, or CIOB. As a role model within the commercial team, you’ll actively maintain your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and contribute to a culture of excellence and growth.
You Will Be Accountable For
* Governance – Has a good knowledge of and adheres to the Company’s governance requirements (BMS & GMCEs)
* Commercial Management and Administration
o Use the company’s ERP and Digital Systems
o Order information and systematically checks data
o Measure, record & value work unsupervised in accordance with appropriate rules and procedures
o Preparation of Cost reconciliation statements
o Measure & interpret works information, specifications & drawings and prepare Bills of Quantities and Schedules of rates.
o Build up estimates from first principle including net and gross estimates
o Measurement of works and agreements with subcontractors
o Review weekly, monthly, section programmes of works
o Plan commercial activities to meet requirements of section programmes
o Collation of Cost and Value Information
o Understanding of the Customer Contract and undertakes customer and stakeholder management for their area of responsibility
o Have an understanding of delay and disruption programmes
* Procurement
o Collect information required to specify procurement requirements
o Record and document information including registration of interest
o Understand the steps / documentation required
o Manage and adjudicate subcontract enquiries
Essentials
* BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying or equivalent knowledge
* CSCS Card (Academically Qualified/Professional Qualified Person)
* MRCIS/MCInstCES/MCIOB or working towards them
