About Vulcain Engineering UK Group & Insite Technical Services
Insite Technical Services is part of the Vulcain Engineering UK Group, an international engineering and consulting group supporting complex energy, infrastructure, and industrial programmes across the United Kingdom and internationally.
Within the group, Insite Technical Services is known for its deep technical capability in electrical, mechanical, and process engineering, delivering high‑integrity engineering design and consultancy services to clients operating in energy transition, utilities, petrochemical processing, terminals, renewables, and regulated industrial environments.
From concept and feasibility through detailed design, construction support, and commissioning, Insite works at the forefront of technically demanding and safety‑critical projects, providing trusted engineering expertise where it matters most.
The Position: Principal Electrical Engineer
Insite Technical Services is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to take a leading role within its electrical engineering discipline, supporting a growing portfolio of energy and industrial projects.
This is a senior, hands‑on engineering position combining technical authority, power systems expertise, and engineering leadership. The successful individual will be responsible for directing complex electrical design scopes, leading power systems engineering activities, mentoring engineers, and acting as the senior electrical interface with clients, contractors, and vendors.
The role offers technical influence, autonomy, and the opportunity to shape engineering standards and best practice within a highly respected consultancy environment.
Some of the main responsibilities of the Principal Electrical Engineer will include:
* Provide technical leadership for electrical engineering design across industrial, energy, utilities, and infrastructure projects
* Lead the preparation, checking, and approval of electrical engineering deliverables, including calculations, technical specifications, datasheets, schedules, drawings, and technical reports
* Act as technical authority for power systems engineering, including load flow studies, fault level assessments, protection coordination, arc flash assessments, harmonic analysis, and system resilience
* Develop and review low voltage and high voltage electrical system designs, including network architecture, protection philosophies, earthing systems, and operational concepts
* Execute and oversee power system studies using recognised engineering software such as ETAP or equivalent platforms
* Define electrical engineering scopes, work packages, and deliverables, supporting project planning, cost estimation, scheduling, risk management, and change control
* Interface directly with clients, original equipment manufacturers, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to resolve complex technical challenges
* Mentor and support the development of graduate, junior, and mid‑level electrical engineers, contributing to long‑term capability building within the business
This position offers the opportunity to lead technically challenging engineering work while having genuine influence over engineering quality, standards, and team development. You will join a stable and growing consultancy where technical excellence is valued, senior engineers have a voice, and long‑term project continuity is a priority.
Pembrokeshire and West Wales also offer an exceptional quality of life, combining meaningful engineering work with access to coastline, countryside, and a more sustainable work‑life balance.
Preferred Profile:
* Degree‑qualified in Electrical Engineering or equivalent industry experience (Higher National Certificate or Higher National Diploma considered)
* Extensive experience delivering electrical engineering design within energy, industrial, utilities, infrastructure, or regulated environments
* Strong background in power systems engineering, including load flow analysis, short‑circuit studies, protection coordination, arc flash assessment, and harmonic analysis
* Proven experience using power system study software such as ETAP or equivalent
* Detailed understanding of low voltage and high voltage electrical systems, typically up to 11 kilovolt or 33 kilovolt
* Experience with electrical cable sizing, electrical calculations, and application of the Eighteenth Edition Wiring Regulations (British Standard 7671)
* Demonstrated ability to lead technical scopes, support project delivery, and provide engineering assurance
* Experience operating within a consultancy or client‑facing engineering environment is advantageous
* Chartered Engineer status, or working towards professional chartership, is beneficial
* Reside locally to Pembrokeshire or be prepared to relocate, as this permanent role does not include travel expense coverage.
We appreciate every application. However, due to the volume we receive, we’re only able to contact candidates who are shortlisted for this role or who may be a strong fit for future opportunities.
