About The Role (External)
What does a Track Operative do? Every day the rail network carries thousands of passenger and freight trains. The track comprises rails, sleepers, fasteners, switches, ballast and foundations. Track Operatives keep this in good condition to ensure trains run safely and without interruption. Using a mix of new technology and manual inspection, Network Rail monitors railway assets around the clock. Maintenance teams are briefed at the start of each shift on the tasks to be completed. As an entry level role, Track Operatives support and learn from Track Technicians and Team Leaders. This can involve fetching, carrying and using track maintenance tools. Teamwork is essential and safety is a priority, as you will often be working next to moving trains. All Track Operatives receive full training and guidance on using hand tools and heavy machinery safely. Pending successful learning and development, Track Operatives can progress to Track Technicians. To reduce disruption to rail services and increase safety for maintenance teams, work is often done at night or over weekends. A varied shift pattern is required and rosters are provided in advance. You may also be required to work in all weather conditions and there is an opportunity to be on call.
Please note you must live within a 60 minute radius of the stated location and hold a Driving Licence.
