For safety reasons, everyone training to be a prison officer needs a suitable standard of hearing (without hearing aids). To work in a high security prison (category A), you must have been a resident in the UK for the last 3 years.
Assessment process
You will be invited to complete stage 1 of the online test, which assesses basic judgement and numerical skills. If you pass, you will proceed to stage 2, a task-based online assessment. Successful completion leads to an online assessment centre (OAC). After passing the OAC and being allocated to a vacancy, you will complete a medical and fitness test, including eyesight, hearing, and basic health screening.
Pay and benefits
* Initial training is 37 hours a week. After training, you can choose to work 37, 39, or 41 hours a week, with salaries reflecting your weekly hours:
* 37 hours: £33,746 per year
* 39 hours: £35,875 per year
* 41 hours: £38,003 per year
* All salary figures include allowances.
* The standard shift pattern is based on 39 hours per week.
* 25 days' annual holiday (rising to 30 days after 10 years)
* Paid time off for public holidays and an extra privilege day
* Civil Service pension with 28.97% employer contributions

Job offers and merit vacancy
This is a merit-based vacancy. Successful candidates at the online assessment centre will be placed on a merit list for 12 months. Positions are offered to the highest scorers first when available. If unsuccessful as a prison officer, you may be offered an alternative role as an Operational Support Grade (OSG).
