Overview
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a leading teaching trust with four hospitals in Oxfordshire. We are looking for a full‑time Band 3 Clinical Support Worker to work in an enhanced role within the theatre department and phlebotomy service. The role supports and works closely with registered practitioners and anaesthetists, contributing to the safe, efficient and smooth running of the department while maintaining the dignity and privacy of all patients.
Responsibilities
* Undertake delegated and specific clinical skills for patients, including care in the anaesthetic room and phlebotomy.
* Prepare patients, families/carers and the environment for clinical activities, reassuring and supporting patients as required.
* Monitor patients after clinical activity, ensuring safety, comfort and well‑being.
* Participate in risk assessments, contribute to and report identified patient risks.
* Raise concerns about poor practice, attitude or behaviour of health‑care professionals through appropriate channels.
* Undertake patient transfer and escort duties between departments as per policy.
* Communicate effectively with patients and families/carers, utilising alternative methods where barriers exist.
* Greet patients and visitors with courtesy, respect and empathy, recognising age‑specific needs.
* Answer telephone calls and bleeps accurately, relaying messages using the SBARR technique.
* Maintain professional boundaries and relationships with patients and colleagues.
* Assist with personal care needs, hygiene, toileting, and mobilisation, promoting patient participation.
* Assess and record skin integrity, reporting changes to the registered practitioner.
* Perform minor dressings and treatments as specified in the plan of care under supervision.
* Support end‑of‑life care in line with patients’ spiritual and cultural needs.
* Collect specimens for laboratory tests, ensuring correct labelling and transport.
* Apply safeguarding principles, understanding the Mental Capacity Act and related legislation.
* Use electronic and paper systems to retrieve and record patient information securely, complying with information governance.
* Obtain appropriate consent before clinical interventions.
* Participate in meetings and handovers, contributing to continuity of care.
* Support families, carers and colleagues during bereavement or while dealing with bad news.
* Maintain accurate, legible patient records and ensure countersignatures by a registered practitioner.
Qualifications
* Completed or willing to complete the Care Certificate.
* Evidence of occupationally relevant proficiencies.
* Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
* Basic computer literacy and ability to use electronic patient record systems.
Desirable Criteria
* Experience in phlebotomy.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Computer skills.
* Knowledge of Electronic Patient Record (EPR) systems.
