JOB SUMMARY:
The Transformer Design Engineer will be responsible for the providing engineering technical support and leadership to Doble customers in the EMEA region who are seeking to purchase new transformers. Other duties may include making condition and life assessments on transformers, or making failure investigations.
Essential Job Functions
* Performs feasibility studies and similar tasks to allow customers to identify transformer and reactor functional requirements.
* Writes technical specifications and similar documents for customers seeking to purchase transformers and reactors.
* Performs transformer and reactor supplier qualification on behalf of customers. Supports customers with development of new transformer and reactor suppliers.
* Reviews and evaluations tenders, bids, and offers from transformer and reactor suppliers, and assess their compliance with customer expectations and requirements. Provides customers with support and guidance during technical negotiations with suppliers.
* Provides customer support during customer design review.This may include making electrical design calculations; review of drawings and documentation; and attendance at meetings, in person or remotely
* Makes progress inspections during transformer and reactor manufacturing
* Witnesses factory acceptance testing, including reviewing and analysing results and also investigating any problems or failures which may occur
* Witnesses site acceptance testing, including reviewing and analysing results and also investigating any problems or failures which may occur
* Provides advice to customers or colleagues on different aspects of transformer or reactor design and construction.Provides training to customers on different aspects of transformer or reactor design and construction, either in person or remotely.
* Supports customers with different aspects of transformer and reactor life management, especially those related to transformer and reactor design and construction. Special focus on life management or troubleshooting during the warranty or trial operation period
* Performs condition and life assessments, for individual transformer or reactors or for populations. Assist customers with troubleshooting or decision making for individual transformer or reactors or for populations
* Performs transformer or reactor failure investigations.
* Performs forensic dismantling and inspection of transformers and reactors at end-o-life, especially for failed transformers and reactors
* Performs other duties as assigned by management.
* Completes administration tasks as assigned by management, including completion of expense claims and timesheets
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree
* Electrical, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent degree
EXPERIENCE -
MUST HAVE:
* At least 5 years professional experience working with transformers and reactors
* Excellent knowledge of transformer and reactor design and construction
* Proven ability to make electrical design calculations for transformers and reactors, up to and including minimum 245kV class and preferably 420kV class. Preferably working at a transformer and reactor factory.
* Excellent knowledge of transformer and reactor manufacturing, including quality procedures
* Excellent knowledge of transformer and reactor factory acceptance testing
* Excellent knowledge of transformer and reactor site acceptance testing
* Proven ability to make transformer testing, either at the factory or the installation site
* Ability to work with colleagues in a team
* Ability to speak, read, and write English to working fluency
* Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
* Ability to communicate with customers, in person/remotely and also through written reports
* Ability to provide training to customers and colleagues. Ability to speak in public at conferences and industry events
* Ability to travel up to 50% of the time, including occasional travel at weekends. Ability to travel throughout Europe and the Mediterranean, occasionally further afield
OTHER HELPFUL EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE-
* Ability to speak one or more modern foreign languages to working fluency. Especially one or more of the following languages: Arabic, Dutch (or Afrikaans or Flemish), French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, or Turkish.
* Proven ability to use advanced transformer modelling software, especially for calculation of electric and magnetic fields or transient over-voltages
* Experience with transformer and reactor life management, especially interpretation of liquid tests or electrical tests at the installation site
* Experience with failure or forensic investigations
* Project management experience
* Driving license
* Work in a position with extensive travel, especially in Europe and the Mediterranean
