Faster Diagnostic Service (FDS) Nurse Role

Support the Faster Diagnostic Standard (FDS) pathway for suspected bladder and prostate cancer, providing specialist advice to primary and secondary care, managing patient referrals, and coordinating downstream investigations.


Responsibilities

* Be an integral part of the FDS multidisciplinary team (MDT).
* Act as a named point of contact for patients referred to FDS.
* Collect survey information for patients referred to FDS.
* Support seamless care for patients with symptoms that could be due to cancer.
* Triage and assess all FDS referrals and guide them to the appropriate diagnostic service.
* Support appropriate and timely investigation of patients.
* Provide knowledge and advice to primary and secondary care regarding pathways, protocols, and onward referrals.
* Develop key relationships with primary and secondary care services (oncology, ED, acute medicine, radiology, endoscopy, pathology).
* Provide a constant point of contact, advice, support and information for all patients referred to FDS.
* Involve patients and carers in planning and delivery of care.
* Collect, collate, evaluate, and report activity data to stakeholders and produce formal reports.
* Monitor investigation results, initiate further assessment and coordinate treatment pathways.
* Work collaboratively with other professionals to ensure discharge arrangements.
* Establish and maintain effective communication with patients, carers, and professionals across health and social services.
* Support the FDS team by collecting, collating, and reporting activity data.
* Assist with the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and guidelines relevant to own area of work.
* Promote patient and public involvement activities and service improvement.
* Ensure effective and efficient use of resources and suggest improvements.
* Act as an independent practitioner, meeting standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
* Participate in audit and clinical governance programmes.
* Meet all statutory and mandatory training requirements.
* Adhere to all Trust and departmental policies, including health & safety and data protection.
* Report all absences in accordance with Trust policy.
* Manage and supervise a FDS band 4 non‑clinical navigator/admin staff (if applicable).
* Provide specialist clinical knowledge to colleagues, patients and carers.


Qualifications

* Registered nurse with a first‑level degree in nursing or equivalent.
* UK professional registration in nursing.
* Experience in urology or willingness to learn.
* Knowledge of FDS and best‑practice time‑pathway issues.
* Experience working with multidisciplinary teams.
* Good organisational and time‑management skills.
* Previous experience in audit and evaluation.
* Able to use own initiative and explain decisions.


Desirable Criteria

* Experience in urology.
* Teaching or mentoring qualification.
* Experience of working as an autonomous practitioner.
* Experience working across professional boundaries.
* Evidence of proactive approach to change and developing clinical practice.
