Offer description

Looking for a role where every small win really matters?

We’re working with a genuinely supportive SEN school in Gateshead that’s on the lookout for an EYFS Teaching Assistant to join their team. This isn’t your average classroom. It’s a place where patience, creativity, and a calm presence go a long way, and where no two days ever look quite the same.

The school supports pupils across a wide range of needs, from PMLD through to SEMH, with a strong focus on autism support. That means variety, challenge, and the chance to make a real impact, every single day.

What your day could look like

You’ll be right at the heart of the classroom, supporting children to feel safe, settled, and ready to learn. Expect a mix of structure, spontaneity, and those brilliant “that’s a breakthrough” moments.

Supporting children with SEMH needs, helping them regulate emotions and feel secure
Using de-escalation and calming strategies when things feel overwhelming
Delivering phonics interventions and supporting early reading skills
Sitting side by side with pupils during reading time, building confidence one page at a time
Helping the teacher run continuous provision, from sensory play to structured activities
Supporting children with a range of autism needs, adapting your approach to suit each individual
Creating a classroom environment that feels safe, predictable, and encouraging
It’s hands-on, it’s rewarding, and yes, it can be challenging, but you’ll never be doing it alone.

What we’re looking for

Experience working with children, ideally in EYFS or SEN settings
Confidence supporting pupils with SEMH, autism, or complex needs
A calm, patient approach, especially during tricky moments
Someone who can build trust, quickly and genuinely
A team player who’s happy to roll up their sleeves and get involved

Experience required

We’re looking for someone who’s already had some hands-on experience, this could be through:

Working in a school, nursery, or SEN setting
Supporting children with additional needs, including autism or SEMH
Experience with phonics, early reading, or EYFS provision
Roles in care, youth work, or support work where you’ve helped children or young people regulate and engage
Not ticked every box? That’s okay. If you’ve got the right attitude and a genuine passion for supporting children, we still want to hear from you.
