Overview
The role is essential in supervising our host/hostess support across the wards of the hospital. As Senior Patient Catering Supervisor, you will supervise the patient catering ward host/hostess team and provide advice and support to staff. You will use your own initiative, be able to work unsupervised, and undertake specific project work as necessary. You will work collaboratively with other supervisors and managers, reporting to a manager, and be responsible for team rotas and delivering training to existing and new staff.
Main duties of the job
You will be expected to plan and manage a range of duties, organise your own work and that of others to meet deadlines, and respond professionally to queries and issues.
As a Senior Patient Catering Supervisor, you will work collaboratively with other supervisors and managers but refer to a manager. You will be responsible for team rotas and delivering training to existing and new staff.
IT skills are required, as you will be using several different systems, such as Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, along with various Trust-based systems for training and payroll (ESR).

Job responsibilities
To manage your own time and duties with autonomy, schedule, chair team meetings with follow-up as appropriate, and refer to the deputy manager as necessary.
To organise, create and adjust rotas, ensuring appropriate staffing levels are maintained through ward shift patterns and 24/7 coverage in A&E, 365 days a year, including arranging extra duties and cover as required.
Co-ordinate deployment of staff to ensure all operational areas receive a host/hostess to carry out hydration rounds, food delivery service, and cleaning services.
Carry out weekly ward-level audits with team members and sign off on cleaning schedules.
Supervise the catering hosts with delivery of the catering service in line with National Standards for Healthcare Food and Drink, and National Standards of Healthcare Cleanliness.
Provide training, guidance, direction, and leadership to host/hostess staff regarding duties and responsibilities. Support at ward level to ensure delivery of a flawless customer service experience.
Be a first-level trainer, working one-on-one to ensure each employee works to the correct standards, including food safety and allergen awareness.
Support ward-level staffing and assist in delivering where shortfalls arise; carry out hydration rounds, food delivery service, and cleaning services as needed.
Operate equipment physically and accurately. Clean, adjust, and maintain ward kitchen equipment. Produce SOPs/Risk assessments and record maintenance checks for equipment.
Ensure hazards or equipment faults are escalated and reported to the line manager and rectified.
Undertake staff appraisals and personal development plans in line with trust policy, ensuring appraisal data is up to date.
Plan, organise and undertake staff reviews during probationary periods, in line with trust policy.
Assist line managers with shortlisting, recruitment, and induction/orientation of new staff, including off-site recruitment events if required.
Undertake return-to-work interviews following absences, referring staff to line management if absences exceed policy.
Monitor and complete attendance records on payroll systems and timekeeping, addressing conduct issues per Trust policies.
Be the first line of contact for disciplinary matters, reporting persistent issues to senior management in a timely fashion per Trust policy.
Support line with investigations of disciplinary or performance-related matters.
Organise catering staff annual leave applications, ensuring service needs are met.
Investigate problems/issues with ward-level staff and provide solutions with appropriate delegation.
Liaise with wards and departments to resolve day-to-day problems and coordinate with external contractors when needed.
Produce cleaning frequencies and schedules in line with National Standards of Healthcare Cleanliness for all areas of the trust.
Promote quality control procedures (ward/departmental environmental and efficacy audits) to monitor work and maintain statutory compliance; provide regular feedback to line managers and HS manager.
Escalate any issues affecting the provision of high-quality catering to management.
Provide relevant patient catering data on spreadsheets as required by the Hotel Services Manager and Catering Services Manager.
Manage and control cleaning consumables/chemicals to ensure economical use and waste reduction, keeping within budget targets.
Plan work to maintain agreed service levels; ensure risk assessments and operating procedures for host/hostess work are in place and reviewed annually with the Deputy, Catering Services Manager.
Ensure all work adheres to department procedures, including PPE usage.
Report faults and environmental damage in ward areas, ward kitchens, and the wider Trust to Trust property through the line manager and Datix system.
Keep appropriate records, including staff records, up to date. Produce reports as required by Trusts and line managers.
Maintain high standards of personal presentation and hygiene during performance of duties.
All duties will be carried out in accordance with departmental instructions, Trust Policies and Procedures, and Health & Safety Policy.
Assist the management team in developing the service and propose changes to practices and department policies when needed.
To complete accurate and factual reports of relevant issues within the patient catering department and inform supervisor colleagues and the line manager of ongoing issues that impact the department or service.
To create, develop, contribute, and maintain good inter-departmental relationships through regular liaison with staff and service users.
Communicate professionally with other Trust managers.
Attend meetings in a professional manner representing Hotel Services for any issue affecting Patient Catering services.
Undertake any required training to ensure duties are fully carried out.
Maintain security of the premises and environment by following all safety procedures and personal safety guidelines.
Person Specification
Education, Training and Qualifications
* Educated to Vocational Level 3, City and Guilds or equivalent level of education via training or experience.
* Evidence of further education, training or experience to diploma level
* Strong literacy, numeracy, and IT skills.
* Willingness to undergo additional training
Knowledge and Experience
* Experience of working in a customer-focused catering environment
* Knowledge of the National Standards of Food & Drink and Healthcare Cleanliness.
* Communicates technical information to department colleagues, staff, patients, and public when required.
