What you’ll do
- Be a senior leader – reporting to the Director, set direction, drive performance, and ensure technical teams deliver against business priorities.
- Act as the senior engineering lead – ensuring adherence to all standards, legislation, and best practice (e.g. DMRB, SHW, TSRGD, CDM).
- Oversee all design stages (pre‑construction) – ensure quality, safety, risk management, and robust approval processes are all met.
- Be responsible for S106, S38, S278 technical approvals, ensuring designs, inspections, and delivery meet adoption standards.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams – drive performance, collaboration, and professional development (training, chartership).
- Provide management – skills, capacity, and future capability for Via’s Technical Services. Promote digital engineering and modern methods where appropriate.
- Be accountable for managing budgets, forecasting, and consultancy income; oversee cost control, procurement, and project governance.
- Represent at senior level – to clients, authorities, developers, and regulators. Build relationships and provide leadership at industry forums and boards.
What you’ll be
A strategic, client‑facing technical leader responsible for overall design, including engineering standards, delivery team capability, and infrastructure outcomes across Via’s pre‑construction services.
What we’re seeking
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (or equivalent) through ICE, CIHT, IHE, IStructE, IET, or significant relevant civil engineering experience.
- Extensive senior technical leadership experience in highways, civil engineering or infrastructure design, with a strong track record leading large multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong expertise in highways engineering, structures, street lighting and ITS, with deep knowledge of S38/S278 processes and technical approvals.
- Excellent understanding of statutory duties, national standards and technical assurance, with sound engineering judgement and risk management capability.
- Strong commercial awareness with experience managing fee‑earning services, delivering efficient design solutions and driving value engineering.
- Proven experience delivering civil engineering and ideally highway projects, with solid NEC contract knowledge.
- Experience working within a local authority, public sector or major infrastructure delivery environment.
