Overview
Healthcare Assistant – Band 3 at Devon Partnership NHS Trust. Location: The Junipers, Dryden Road, Exeter, EX2 5AG. The ward is a 10-bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) on a 24/7 site requiring shift work with unsocial enhancements in addition to basic pay.
About PICU
The Junipers is a state-of-the-art psychiatric intensive care unit providing care for men and women with severe mental health needs. You will join a friendly, multidisciplinary team to deliver a package of care that supports recovery and independence in the local community.
About You
We are looking for a Health Care Assistant who may already work in a psychiatric intensive care setting or is keen to work in this area. You should be passionate about delivering high-quality care, have excellent communication skills, and be comfortable working as part of a 24/7 ward team.
Key expectations include working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, communicating effectively, and contributing to a safe and therapeutic environment.
Job Responsibilities
* To assist multi-disciplinary team members in the delivery of care and treatment to people using services, addressing social, physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual needs.
* Be responsible for undertaking practical procedures under the supervision of trained nursing staff.
* Participate in planning and delivering individual treatment programmes and recovery care plans under supervision.
* Assist with communication, documentation, and record-keeping in line with legislation and Trust policies.
* Support patients with daily living activities and therapeutic engagements, including group and individual activities.
* Escort and support patients, monitor nutritional needs, and assist in maintaining a safe environment.
* Recognise signs of abuse and report concerns in line with safeguarding procedures.
* Participate in ward/team meetings and MDT discussions.
* Be involved in keeping equipment and environment safe and clean, and assist with stock control and service improvements.
Planning, Organisation & Accountability
* Involve in assessment and implementation of treatment programmes under supervision.
* Prioritise tasks and manage shift workloads in discussion with the Nurse-in-Charge.
* Work within a flexible shift system (days, evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays) as required.
* Follow line manager directions and act within competency; participate in supervision and annual appraisals.
Qualifications & Experience
* Care Certificate within the first 6 months of employment (or evidence of equivalent). If not obtained, the position may be trainee until completion.
* Essential: Previous care experience or working with people in a caring setting; IT and safeguarding knowledge; ability to establish professional therapeutic relationships; good communication and team-working skills.
* Desirable: NVQ Level 3 / QCF Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent; knowledge of mental health and physical health presentations; problem-solving skills.
