We are looking for an enthusiastic clinician who has the necessary ophthalmic skills to support the medical and surgical retina team both in clinic and theatre management. The time table would include clinics and theatre lists to support the existing team. The post holder will be encouraged to continue to work with the wider team in the development of the integrated eye service.
The post holder will be expected to work closely with colleagues and management in developing the ability of the department to respond to operational pressures together with clinical governance and longer term service strategies.

* Providing outpatient new & review clinics including urgent referrals.
* Virtual clinic
* Provide post operative care to patients
* Liaise with Optometrist, Orthoptist & triage nurses
* Prepare patients for emergency theatre sessions.
* Dealing with both routine and emergency admissions.
* Participate in clinical audit & demonstrate evidence based practice where appropriate.
* Contribute to service development in areas of special interest and expertise.
* Actively participate in continuing medical education.
* Undertake personal appraisal and job-planning as part of revalidation.
Working for our organisation
The successful applicant will join a Consultant led clinical team covering all aspects of Ophthalmology services.
This successful applicant will work innovatively with our clinical team and a range of colleagues to research, design and deliver this service. Key partners will be the Trust A&E Departments, Optometrists, Orthoptists, Paediatricians, Neonatologists, GPs, Nurses and Managers in primary and secondary care.
The successful candidate will primarily work across the two main hospital sites and will be involved in general and specialist clinics, in addition to supporting the emergency eye service.
The post holder will receive training and participate in the on-going provision of Ophthalmology Services and Developments.
The Eye Unit provides a comprehensive Ophthalmology service with a catchment area of approximately 600,000 people.
The service encompasses outpatient clinics (conducted at the Royal Blackburn Hospital, Burnley General Hospital and St Peter’s Centre in Burnley), an emergency eye service at Burnley General Hospital and a dedicated twin theatre suite based in a new state of the art facility in the Fairhurst Building at Burnley General Hospital. The medical team includes Consultants, Associate Specialist, Specialty Doctors, Staff Grades and also trainees at ST 1 - 6 level.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Proposed Outline Job Plan for the post holder will include as a minimum 1 theatre session, 1 admin, 1 audit/study plus specialty/general clinics and laser sessions dependent on your level of competence and the sub specialty.
The successful applicant will be required to participate in medical and clinical audit arrangements in the Trust.

* MB BS or equivalent
* Specialist Training (or equivalent) in Ophthalmology
Desirable criteria
* Diploma in Ophthalmology or Higher Degree
* Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (or equivalent)
* Experience in Medical and Surgical retina

* 2-3 years as an Ophthalmic SHO or equivalent
* 4 years as Ophthalmic Registrar/ST or equivalent
* Experience of working in an emergency setting/eye clinic
* Broad general ophthalmic training
* Good understanding of audit and governance
* Good surgical skills including independent cataract surgery
Desirable criteria
* Research experience
* Surgical experience at Registrar/ST level
* Subspecialty interest in Medical and surgical retina
* Ability to do refraction.
