In delivering a stable, high-performing technology estate within a complex control environment, you'll be responsible for day-to-day database administration while driving improvements through automation, modern database practices, and enhanced service availability.
Success in this role means balancing BAU responsibilities with a strong focus on continuous improvement—particularly around cloud adoption, performance optimisation, and process efficiency.
You'll bring broad technical expertise, especially in database management, and work as part of a collaborative team spread across Edinburgh and Witham.
Key Responsibilities include:
1. Oversee the performance and suitability of the Aegon UK database estate across test and production environments (approx. 300 databases).
2. Ensure effective monitoring, maintenance, and performance tuning, providing recommendations and solutions where needed.
3. Maintain compliance with internal policies and controls, including security, SOx, and audit requirements.
4. Investigate database-related issues promptly, conduct root cause analysis, and manage resolution activities.
5. Champion an automation-first approach, identifying and implementing opportunities to streamline DBA processes.
6. Collaborate closely with the wider Environment Operations team to anticipate project needs, align delivery, and manage resource planning.
We'd love to hear from you if you have:
* Experience with a range of database technologies, such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, PostgreSQL, Sybase, MySQL, RDS, and AWS services.
* A solid understanding of complex architecture across varied environments and technologies.
* Hands-on experience managing and supporting large-scale database estates.
* Proven skills in database monitoring and performance tuning.
* A strong grasp of both business and technology processes that underpin platform operations.
* A solid understanding of ITIL principles and their application within IT service management environments.
