Job Title: Carer

Responsible to: Directly accountable to and taking direction from the employer and the employer’s representative (parents)

Hours: 28 hours per week

Work Pattern: Monday 15:45 to 19:45
Tuesday 07:30 to 09:00
Wednesday 14:30 to 20:00
Thursday 14:30 to 20:00
Friday 07:30 to 09:00
Friday 15:45 to 17:45
Sunday 08:30 to 14:30

Additional hours to cover annual leave and holidays from college

Hourly Rate of Pay: £14.00 (holiday pay and pension contributions)

Based at: Family home in Hitchin, Hertfordshire and out in the community

Job Purpose

Supporting a young man who has a rare neurological condition, he requires full support for all daily living tasks, including full personal care. He has a great sense of humour and enjoys being outside, listening to music, and being read to. He has severe disability including sensory loss of sight and speech. A wheelchair user and is reliant on others to help him access the world.

Main duties

Support with

• Full Personal care- dressing, bathing, brushing teeth etc
• Administering medication via peg feeding tube
• Administering feeds via peg feeding tube
• Hoisting for all transfers- ceiling tracking installed, height adjustable changing table, bath and bed
• Assisting with physiotherapy exercises
• Assisting to access the world, including trips out- has own wheelchair accessible vehicle.
• Laundry, changing bed, keeping areas clean and tidy.

Personal Specification

Essential

• Experience in care
• Must be fluent in spoken English due to his sensory deficits and hearing difficulties.
• Caring personality, Be patient and supportive.
• Wants to make a positive difference to the young man’s life.
• Good sense of humour
• Certain amount of flexibility
Enjoys working 1:1
• Be friendly and outgoing.
• Be honest, reliable and trustworthy.
• Be respectful of the employer’s dignity, at all times.
• Understand the need for privacy and confidentiality.
• A willingness to undergo any training highlighted by the employer.
• You should have some knowledge and understanding of risks.
• Have an awareness and knowledge of equal opportunities.
• Like dogs- young man has a dog!

Desirable

• Have experience of peg feeding
• Have experience of hoisting transfers
• Knowledge of seizure/epilepsy

The post carries a 3-month probationary period.
